Abstract: 

This study reported quantifications of fine particle bound trace metals and their potential health risks for residents in Guangzhou, a rapidly developing and most populated city in South China. The fine particle samples were collected from October 29th to November 8th. of 2006 at two different elevations in a mainly residential area and analyzed for the total concentration of aluminum, iron, zinc, lead, manganese, copper, arsenic, chromium, nickel, cadmium, molybdenum and cobalt. Results showed that the fine particle concentrations ranged from 95.8mg/m3 to 194.7mg/m3 at the ground and 83.3-190.0mg/m3 on the roof, which were much higher than the 24 h fine particle standard (35mg/m3) recommended by USEPA. The total concentrations of zinc, lead, arsenic, chromium and cadmium in fine particle were 504.8, 201.6, 24.3, 7.7 and 4.4ng/m3, respectively, which were comparable to other major cities of China, but much higher than major cities outside of China. A sequential extraction procedure was used to fractionate these fine particle bound metals into four different fractions. Results indicated that most toxic metals were mainly distributed in bioavailable fractions. For instance, about 91 % of cadmium, 85 % of lead and 74 % of arsenic were in bioavailable forms. Risk calculations with a simple exposure assessment model showed that the cancer risks of the bioavailable fractions of arsenic, chromium and cadmium were 3 to 33 times greater than usual goal, indicating serious health risks to the residents in this urban area.

Abstract: 

The screening of potential chemicals for control of Bemisia tabaci on poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima c.v. Lilo Pink) plants using a leaf dipping technique was investigated. All relevant B. tabaci life stages (eggs, larvae and adults) were investigated. In leaf dipping tests, Certis spraying oil was the only compound to show potential to be used as a control agent against B. tabaci eggs, with 81% obtained mortality. Oberon resulted in no mortality of B. tabaci eggs in the reported experiments. Leaf dipping against second instar and adult B. tabaci proved more effective for all chemical products. Dipping techniques using Majestik, Certis spraying oil and Agri- 50 E all resulted in high second instar larval mortality (93, 87 and 85.5%, respectively). Certis spraying oil again resulted in a high efficacy against adult B. tabaci with 100% mortality obtained. The potential of the various chemicals to be incorporated into integrated pest management strategies for the control of B. tabaci is discussed.

Abstract: 

Coral reefs are deteriorating worldwide due to various stresses, including pollution of hazardous chemicals such as antifouling chemicals. Occurrence and impacts of a new antifouling biocide Irgarol-1051 (2-methylthio- 4-tert- butylamino -6-cyclopropylamino -s-triazine) have been studied in coral reef waters around Okinawa Islands, Japan. The average concentration of Irgarol detected at commercial and fisheries Ports was 24.70±9.88ng/L. In Naha Bay, the average concentration of Irgarol was 10.00±12.98ng/L. The average level detected around the Ports has already approaches the environmental risk limit for the marine organisms. Irgarol was detected in waters at the frequency of 92.3 % (24/26) of the total samples collected during two sampling campaigns (September and December, 2007) at the Ports. In Naha Bay, Irgarol was detected by 40.5 % (17/42) of the total water samples collected monthly from Sep., 2007 to Feb., 2008, indicating that Irgarol is widely detected along the coastal shorelines of Okinawa Island. The ecotoxicological study revealed that the rate of photosynthesis in the coral Galaxea fascicularis was significantly reduced by 18 % and 121 % relative to control when the corals were exposed to 1000 and 10,000ng/L of Irgarol, respectively. The calcification rate dropped by 98.3 % relative to control when the corals were exposed to 10,000ng/L of Irgarol. The results of the present study report the wide occurrence of new antifouling biocide Irgarol around coastal areas of Okinawa Island. However, the contamination does not pose serious threat on the photosynthesis and calcification of corals under short term exposure (96 h).

Abstract: 

Dynamic hydrosalinity models are available, but are not used extensively on a large scale soil which receives wastewater from industrial areas, partly because adequate database are expensive to be obtained. Thus, for this reason, there is an urgent need to assess the salt and other pollutant loads collected in wastewater flows into the soil and/ or ground water systems. A conceptual hydrosalinity model was used on two major underlying principals of mass balance and steady state. This model was initially tested on the 4,117 km2 plains west of the Yazd-Ardakan district in the central part of Iran. This model was used at a time when the soil and ground water salinity problem was serious due to the high shortage of water. It was possible to calibrate the model with ± 2% of the flow volume and total dissolved solids of the industrial wastewater discharge from over 2,000 factories. The verification results were 98 % of the measured values. Moreover, this model was tested for the verification of the model data from the analysis of 36 wells’ water in the area where industrial wastewater discharge was used. The results showed that most of the indices of total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand are above standard levels. The results of the model can be used for the management practice of the reduction of salt pollutant load in the area to achieve sustainable development for location of industries in the study area.

Abstract: 

Residue of methanolic extract of Egyptian Jatropha curcas contains bioactive substances such as phenolic compounds, which succeeded to be used as natural antioxidants for the protection of oils and their corresponding biodiesel against oxidative deterioration. In the present work, the residue of Jatropha roots were extracted with methanol and resulting residues were investigated regarding their content of total phenolic compounds by folin-Cioalteau assay. Further, the antioxidant activities of the extracts were characterized by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical method and proved remarkable results. Oxidation stability of Jatropha oil, used fried oil and olive oil and their corresponding biodiesel obtained by conventional transesterification were tested using thermal oxidation. Natural antioxidants such as (a -trocopherol), synthetic antioxidants as butylated hydroxytoluene and natural Jatropha root extract were used in the present study in comparison to investigate their addition effect on the oxidative stability of oils and their corresponding biodiesel. In the rapied thermal treatment test, results showed that addition of butylated hydroxytoluene 0.25% was able to stabilize Jatropha oil 6 h, but poorly stabiliz biodiesel. Addition of 0.25% a-trocopherol to Jatropha oil showed less oxidation stability after 2h thermal treatment. Crude root extract addition at 0.25% to Jatropha oil showed good stability up to 4h thermal treatment while addition of root extract at 0.25% to biodiesel showed better stability up to 6h thermal treatment. Besides addition of 220ppm crude root extract to biodiesel was enough sufficient to occur oxidative stabilization. Also Jatropha root residue addition at 400ppm was effective antioxidant for fresh Jatropha oil.

Abstract: 

Knowledge of moisture content is crucial in assessing spatial and temporal movement of water through the unsaturated zone. Moisture storage is also important for monitoring the soil water balance and for validation of water balance models. The purpose of this work was to determine and analyse moisture content profiles at point locations in the unsaturated zone of a lateritic soil around Nsimi, south of Cameroon. Neutron probe has been connected to a set of tensiometers in an area of 60 ha. A comparative study between a site covered with vegetation and a site uncovered was conducted to assess the influence of vegetation in the process of moisture transfers. The results showed that the spatial distribution of moisture profiles varied according to the site and the texture of the soil, with in general increasing of moisture from the surface horizon toward the deeper layers. The mean values of moisture varied from qm =0,397 cm3/cm3 on barren site, against qm=0,429 cm3/cm3 in vegetation. Values of suction were generally strong in surface and at depth, but weak in the intermediate layers.

Abstract: 

Species diversity is one of the most important indices used for evaluating the sustainability of forest communities. This study aims to characterize the forest communities and to identify and compare the plant species diversity in the study area. For this purpose, 152 relevés were sampled by a randomized-systematic method, using the Braun-Blanquet scale. Classification of the vegetation was conducted by the twinspan algorithm. Four communities, including Querco-Carpinetum betulii, Carpineto-Fagetum Oriental, Rusco-Fagetum Oriental and Fagetum Oriental were recognized. Species richness, Shannon, and Simpson indices were applied to quantify diversity of the different communities. Turkey test was used to investigate the differences in the species richness, diversity and evenness indices among the different communities. The results illustrate that Querco-Carpinetum betulii and Carpineto-Fagetum Oriental communities are significantly more diverse than Rusco-Fagetum Oriental and Fagetum Oriental communities. The spatial structure of the releves becomes more ‘homogenous’ and the dominance structure changes: the proportion of beech-forest species is gradually increasing. At the same time, the number of species per unit area decreases constantly,reaching eventually the value comparable to that recorded for hornbeam forest. Generally, species diversity is inversely correlated with the dominance of shade tolerant climax species.

Abstract: 

Although traditional artificial neural networks have been an attractive topic in modeling membrane filtration, lower efficiency by trial-and-error constructing and random initializing methods often accompanies neural networks. To improve traditional neural networks, the present research used the wavelet network, a special feed forward neural network with a single hidden layer supported by the wavelet theory. Prediction performance and efficiency of the proposed network were examined with a published experimental dataset of cross-flow membrane filtration. The dataset was divided into two parts: 62 samples for training data and 329 samples for testing data. Various combinations of transmembrane pressure, filtration time, ionic strength and zeta potential were used as inputs of the wavelet network so as to predict the permeate flux. Through the orthogonal least square alogorithm, an initial network with 12 hidden neurons was obtained which offered a normalized square root of mean square of 0.103 for the training data. The initial network led to a wavelet network model after training procedures with fast convergence within 30 epochs. Further the wavelet network model accurately depicted the positive effects of either transmembrane pressure or zeta potential on permeate flux. The wavelet network also offered accurate predictions for the testing data, 96.4 % of which deviated the measured data within the ± 10 % relative error range. Moreover, comparisons indicated the wavelet network model produced better predictability than the back-forward back propagation neural network and the multiple regression models. Thus the wavelet network approach could be employed successfully in modeling dynamic permeate flux in cross-flow membrane filtration.

Abstract: 

Expansion in electrical and electronic equipment trade has led to significant increase in electronic waste which should be dealt with special priority due to its potential negative impact to the public health and the environment. Thermal plasma technology offers a very promising alternative of hazardous waste treatment for the near future. In this study, a laboratory scale apparatus for generating high temperature plasma flame was presented. Design of a 20 kW plasma torch system was based on a non transferred direct current arc discharge with air as a medium gas. In this investigation, measurements of temperature distribution were performed. It was shown that high temperature flames can be generated, comparable to those reported in the literature. The gas temperature was found to increase with an increase in power input. The flame temperature was found to further increase from 1210 K to 1480 K when a small amount of added fuel gas. Assessment of electronic waste treatment using the air plasma system in a batch operation was also carried out. It was shown that the system was able to convert the electronic waste into combustible gas and inert solid residues. High mass loss rate of bulk electronic waste was demonstrated.

Abstract: 

Land use change quantified for the last 50 years within and near a fast growing agricultural land in Neka River Basin, using geographic information systems. Land cover and land use change was projected for the next decade using topography, geology, land use maps and remote sensing data of the study area. The study explored the relationships between agricultural land growth and landscape changes. The land use changes assessed among the different land cover classes. It is important to mention that conducting of the present study a very severe land cover changes taken place as the result of agricultural land development. These changes in land cover led to the forest degradation of the study area. Relationship between land-use changes and agricultural growth offered a more robust prediction of soil erosion in Neka watershed. This study aims to find the relationships between land use pattern, erosion and the sediment yield in the study area. The land use coefficient has applied in the model of erosion potential method to forecast the effect of the land type to reduce the erosion. The results of this study indicated that the total sediment yield of the study area has notably decreased to 89.24 % after an appropriate land use/cover alteration. The estimated special erosion for the southern Neka Basin is about 144465.1 m3/km2 where after management policy is predicted 15542.9 m3/km2/y. Therefore, the total difference for the study area has estimated about 128922.2 m3/km2/y.

Abstract: 

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using maize tassel as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) ions from aqueous solutions. The effect of pH, solution temperature, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and adsorbent dose on the adsorption of chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) by tassel was investigated using batch methods. Adsorption for both chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) was found to be highly pH dependent compared to the other parameters investigated. Obtained results gave an adsorption capacity of 79.1% for chromium (VI) at pH 2, exposure time of 1h at 25oC. Maximum capacity of cadmium of 88 % was obtained in the pH range of 5-6 at 25oC after exposure time of 1h. The adsorption capacities of tassel for both chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) were found to be comparable to those of other commercial adsorbents currently in use for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous wastes. These results have demonstrated the immense potential of maize tassel as an alternative adsorbent for toxic metal ions remediation in polluted water and wastewater.

Abstract: 

The ability of native bacteria to utilize diesel fuel as the sole carbon and energy source was investigated in this research. Ten bacterial strains were isolated from the oil refinery field in Tehran, Iran. Two biodegradation experiments were performed in low and high (500 and 10000ppm, respectively) concentration of diesel fuel for 15 days. Only two isolates were able to efficiently degrade the petroleum hydrocarbons in the first test and degraded 86.67% and, 80.60% of diesel fuel, respectively. The secondary experiment was performed to investigate the toxicity effect of diesel fuel at high concentration (10000ppm). Only one strain was capable to degrade 85.20 % of diesel fuel at the same time (15 days). Phenotype and phylogeny analysis of this strain was characterized and identified as diesel degrading bacteria, based on gram staining, biochemical tests, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. These results indicate that this new strain was Bacillus sp. and could be considered as Bacillus Cereus with 98 % 16 S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The results indicate that native strains have great potential for in situ remediation of diesel-contaminated soils in oil refinery sites.

Abstract: 

The present study investigated the phenol utilization kinetics of a pure culture of an indigenous Pseudomonas fluorescence under steady state and non-steady state (washout) conditions. Steady states of a continuous culture with an inhibitory substrate was used to estimate kinetic parameters under substrate limitation (chemo stat operation) Pure cultures of an indigenous Pseudomonas fluorescence were grown in continuous culture on phenol as the sole source of carbon and energy at dilution rates of 0.010 – 0.20/h. Using different dilution rates, several steady states were investigated and the specific phenol consumption rates were calculated. In addition, phenol degradation was investigated by increasing the dilution rate above the critical dilution rate (washout cultivation). The results showed that the specific phenol consumption rate increased with increased dilution rate at steady state and phenol degradation by Pseudomonas fluorescence can be described by simple substrate inhibition kinetics under substrate limitation but cannot be described by simple substrate inhibition kinetics under washout cultivation. Fitting of the steady state data from continuous cultivation to various inhibition models resulted in the best fit for Haldane, Yano and Koga (2), Aiba and Teissier kinetic inhibition models. The rsmax value of 0.229 mg/mg/h obtained from the inhibition model equations was comparable to the experimentally calculated rsmax value of 0.246 mg/mg/h obtained under washout cultivation. Therefore, the biokinetic constants evaluated using these models showed good tolerance and growth of the indigenous organism.

Abstract: 

Arsenic is a ubiquitous element in the environment and occurs naturally in both organic and inorganic forms. Under aerobic condition, the dominant form of arsenic in waters is arsenate, which is highly mobile and toxic. Arsenic poisoning from drinking water remains a serious world health issue. There are various standard methods for arsenic removal from drinking waters (coagulation, sorption, ion-exchange reactions or methods of reverse osmosis) and alternative methods, such as biosorption. Biosorption of arsenic from natural and model waters by native or chemically modified (with urea or ferric oxyhydroxides) plant biomass prepared from sawdust of Picea abies was studied. The kinetic of the adsorption process fitted well the pseudo second order adsorption model and equilibrium was achieved after 2h. The results showed that biosorption was well described by both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The maximum biosorption capacity of the sawdust modified with ferric oxyhydroxides, evaluated by Langmuir adsorption model, was 9.259mg/g, while the biosorption capacity of unmodified biosorbent or biosorbent modified with urea was negligible. The adsorption capacity is comparable to results published by other authors, suggesting that the prepared chemically modified biosorbent has potential in remediation of contaminated waters.

Abstract: 

This study focuses on treatment of landfill leachate in column experiments by immobilized Trametes versicolor on polyurethane foam, collected from Nonthaburi landfill site, Thailand. In this study, glucose was used as a co-substrate. The effect of biomass growth on color removal was observed by immobilizing fungi on polyurethane foam. The same immobilized fungi were used for four cycles of 5 days each to find the reuse of fungi. Leachate was diluted to see the effect of organic loading on color removal. At optimum pH of 4 and in 20 days with 3g/L of glucose, the fungi could decolorize 78% and 63 % for 5-times dilution and concentrated leachate, respectively, using immobilized fungi after 4 days initial growth. Fungi could also reduce biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand of 52% and 42% (with initial biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand of 48,900 and 96,512mg/L), respectively, with glucose 3g/L in concentrate leachate and with 4 days initial immobilization of fungi on polyurethane foam. About 1-6% higher color removal was observed on day 20 with 15 days fungi immobilization initially as compared to 4 days immobilization. Higher removal efficiency was observed for the same leachate after dilution due to reduction in organic loading. Addition of co-substrate enhances significantly removal of color, biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand. Chemical oxygen demand removal reached to 0.6 mg/mg of biomass with the co substrate. Therefore, white rot fungi can be considered as potentially useful microorganisms in landfill leachate treatment.

Abstract: 

In this study, spatial and seasonal variations of water quality in Haraz River Basin were evaluated using multivariate statistical techniques, such as cluster analysis, principal component analysis and factor analysis. Water quality data collected from 8 sampling stations in river during 4 seasons (Summer and Autumn of 2007, Winter and Spring of 2008) were analyzed for 10 parameters (dissolved oxygen, Fecal Coliform, pH, water temperature, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrate, total phosphate, turbidity, total solid and discharge). Cluster analysis grouped eight sampling stations into three clusters of similar water quality features and thereupon the whole river basin may be categorized into three zones, i.e. low, moderate and high pollution. The principle component analysis/factor analysis assisted to extract and recognize the factors or origins responsible for water quality variations in four seasons of the year. The natural parameters (temperature and discharge), the inorganic parameter (total solid) and the organic nutrients (nitrate) were the most significant parameters contributing to water quality variations for all seasons. Result of principal component analysis and factor analysis evinced that, a parameter that can be significant in contribution to water quality variations in river for one season, may less or not be significant for another one.

Abstract: 

Increasing environmental problems enforce companies to be more environmental responsible. A company’s environmental performance is not only related to the company’s inner environmental efforts, but also it is affected by the suppliers’ environmental performance and image. As a stakeholder of the company, a supplier with bad environmental image affects badly the company’s environmental image. Also, raw materials and semi-finished products supplied from out of the company recourses- suppliers- affects the products environmental features such as life cycle, re-usability, re-manufacturability, hazardous substances, etc. Considering these direct and indirect effects, managers should also consider environmental performances of their suppliers in their supplier evaluation process. In this paper, a methodology for the evaluation of suppliers’ environmental performances is proposed. In this methodology, a hybrid Fuzzy-Analytic Network Process and Fuzzy-Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations approach is utilized. Additionally, a numerical example is given to foster the better understanding of the methodology and the obtained results are analyzed with sensitivity analyses.

Abstract: 

Electro oxidation processes are developed throughout the world for ambient temperature destruction of organic wastes. Several of these processes are based on mediated electrochemical oxidation. This article presents the experimental results of electro chemical study based on mediated electrochemical oxidation process conducted for synthetic organic ion exchange resin materials. Investigation was carried out using the traditional noble metal oxide coated anode, ruthenium oxide-titanium and the mediator used for the experiment was ferrous sulphate, with sodium chloride as supporting electrolyte. The concentration of sodium chloride was maintained at 5, 8, 12gm/L. The experiment was carried out in batch recirculation reactor with varied current densities for various flow rates. The study highlighted that in batch reactor set up the best effect of total organic content reduction was found to occur at 3.75A/dm2 with flow rate of 20L/h. The simulated studies were carried out for different volumes of effluent and current densities. A graphical analysis was made between the experimental and simulated values and it was found that both the values are very close.

Abstract: 

In this paper, modeling and simulation of combustion process for polybrominated diphenyl ethers in rotary kilns has been investigated. Proper formula is found for the solid wastes which contain polybrominated diphenyl ethers and then combustion process is simulated by considering possible reactions, appropriate dimensions and operating conditions for rotary kiln and necessary relations for reaction rates. The software of MATLAB is used for the simulation. The mass variations for solid waste, outlet gas and its components are calculated during 20 h. The results show that the reaction rate is high for the first 2h, thus the value of solid waste and oxygen decrease quickly while value of produced gases increases. The mass increase of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans during the whole time of the process is linear with mild slope but for the other compounds, including steam, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromine, the slope of variations becomes mild after 3h. The process becomes steady state almost after 9 h.

Abstract: 

A methodology for characterizing ground water quality of watersheds using hydrochemical data that mingle multiple linear regression and structural equation modeling is presented. The aim of this work is to analyze hydrochemical data in order to explore the compositional of phreatic aquifer groundwater samples and the origin of water mineralization, using mathematical method and modeling, in Maknassy Basin, central Tunisia). Principal component analysis is used to determine the sources of variation between parameters. These components show that the variations within the dataset are related to variation in sulfuric acid and bicarbonate, sodium and cloride, calcium and magnesium which are derived from water-rock interaction. Thus, an equation is explored for the sampled ground water. Using Amos software, the structural equation modeling allows, to test in simultaneous analysis the entire system of variables (sodium, magnesium, sulfat, bicarbonate, cloride, calcium), in order to determine the extent to which it is consistent with the data. For this purpose, it should investigate simultaneously the interactions between the different components of ground water and their relationship with total dissolved solids. The integrated result provides a method to characterize ground water quality using statistical analyses and modeling of hydrochemical data in Maknassy basin to explain the ground water chemistry origin.
