Abstract:

Background: Cancer could be called family-involving disease. The current study aimed at determining the relationship between the burden of care and life satisfaction of the Turkish mothers of children with cancer. Methods: The current descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on mothers of 194 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia referred to a chemotherapy polyclinic. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale, and Life Satisfaction Scale, and analyzed with Student’ s t-test for independent groups, One-way ANOVA, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis, and regression tests using SPSS V. 16. Results: Mean age of children was 7. 26± 3. 78 (years), 53. 6% were male, and 64. 4% were previously enrolled at school but could not continue to study due to illness. A significant difference was observed between the average life satisfaction scale scores and economic status of the mothers (P<0. 005). According to Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed between life satisfaction and caregiver burden scores (P<0. 05) (r=-420, P=0. 000). Conclusion: Health care team and especially pediatric nurses should help the mothers by providing information about support systems and counseling services available in the community and facilitating the use of these resources to alleviate their stress and increase their life satisfaction.

Abstract:

Background: Because media have an essential role in people’ s insight into different professions, this study was carried out to investigate the part of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in the public attitude toward the nursing profession in people living in Arak City, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the first six months of 2018. The study sample comprised 400 citizens who were selected by cluster sampling method. The public engagement with Iran national broadcasting and the people’ s perspective toward nursing profession were measured using two researcher-made questionnaires. The obtained data were analyzed by Spearman’ s rank correlation coefficient in SPSS V. 16. Results: The results showed that 67% of the participants have engaged with the media. The average score of non-professional (65. 15± 11. 21) attitude toward the nursing profession was more than the professional attitudes level 1 (64. 40± 12. 03) and level 2 (18. 44± 3. 58). Engagement with national media was associated with non-professional attitude toward nursing (P=0. 032) while it was not related to professional attitude level 1 (P=0. 62) and level 2 (P=0. 22). Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that people’ s engagement with the media is related to the creation of a non-professional attitude toward nursing profession, i. e. the more people interact with broadcasting, the less professional attitude toward nursing they have. Producing programs which shows a real professional and accurate picture of nurses in Iran broadcasting are recommended.

Abstract:

Background: Regarding the undeniable role of nurses in caring for patients with trauma, a suitable method is required for the education of nursing students to meet their needs. In this study, first we designed an educational smartphone application for pre-hospital trauma management and then nursing students evaluated its usefulness. Methods: This applied study has a cross-sectional design and conducted to develop a mobile application. A total of 41 undergraduate nursing students participated in this study. They were selected through the census method from Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2018. The educational content of the application was developed based on the available standard skills required for prehospital trauma management. The study sample first received routine education. Then they used the application to handle and manage care for traumatic patients for one month. The students’ satisfaction with the application was measured using a software called application satisfaction questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed by descriptive statistics in SPSS V. 21. Results: After designing the application, 97. 6% of the students reported that the classification of data in the application was appropriate. From their point of view (92. 7%), the application also provided the required information for the appropriate patient’ s care in trauma situations. All students reported that the application, its links to web pages, movies, texts, and images were easy to use. About 95% of the students reported that graphic components, colors, and moving between pages were easy. Most were satisfied with the application and recommended its use to other undergraduate nursing students. The majority of them (80. 5%) used the application consistently and suggested (80. 5%) that the same application should be prepared for other courses. Conclusion: The application was reported to be easy to use for trauma management and students were generally satisfied. Therefore, it can be used to facilitate the educational process and help students learn at any time and place.

Abstract:

Background: Transformation is the greatest problem that all organizations face today. By the participation of people in the change projects, the possible resistance rate is reduced and the process of change is accelerated. The readiness of individuals makes them more involved in the change process. The current study aimed at investigating the readiness of using nursing Kardex through applying ADKAR Model by nurses working in hospitals affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences. Methods: current descriptive, cross sectional study was conducted on 320 nurses working in hospitals in Tehran, Iran. The subjects in each hospital were selected proportional to the size of the population, using convenient sampling method. Data were collected by demographic and ADKAR model questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics with SPSS V. 16. Results: Most of the subjects (95%) were female. The mean age of the subjects was 31. 86 years with a mean working experience of 8. 21 years. Moreover, 90% of the samples hold a bachelor's degree and most of them served as an official employee; 67. 2% of nurses worked in university teaching hospitals and 32. 8% in general hospitals. The results showed relative readiness of the nurses (more than half of the subjects got average score above 3 in all components) and the efficiency of the ADKAR model to assess their readiness. Conclusion: According to the results, it is recommended to increase the knowledge and ability of nurses to employ nursing Kardex, strengthen supportive factors, especially in non-educational hospitals, to make the changes, and increase the participation of nurses.

Abstract:

Background: The main goal of nursing profession is to provide people’ s health that cannot be achieved only through the use of scientific methods, and it is essential to pay special attention to spirituality and ethics for its attainment. The current study aimed at determining the effect of spirituality training on the moral sensitivity of nursing students. Methods: The current quasi-experimental study was conducted on 70 nursing students of the fourth and higher semesters (35 in each group) from Iran University of Medical Sciences selected by stratified sampling proportion to size method. Pre-test was administered to both groups; then the intervention group attended six training sessions, once a week each for one hour, and the post-test was administered to the two groups one month after the end of the intervention. Data were collected by demographic characteristics and the Korean Version of the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire (K-MSQ), and analyzed by descriptive statistics including frequency distribution, mean and standard d deviation, and inferential statistics including Chi-square, Fisher test, t-test, paired t-test and analysis of covariance using SPSS V. 22. Results: The study results showed a significant difference between the moral sensitivity score of the intervention group before (4. 07± 0. 53) and after (6. 36± 0. 18) training (P<0. 001). Conclusion: The obtained results indicated that the moral sensitivity score of nursing students increased after spirituality training. Due to the fact that nursing students are responsible for providing nursing services in their future careers, placing these concepts in their curriculum as a course unit or along with other courses, especially Islamic ethics and Islamic thought is recommended.

Abstract:

Background: Older adults with chronic illnesses face many challenges related to their diseases and need higher resilience capacities to overcome. Resilience, as a mediator among various dimensions of health, can lead to positive health outcomes in such people. The current study aimed at discovering the impact of resilience on the perception of chronic disease from older adults' perspective. Methods: The current qualitative study was conducted in specialized clinics of Shahid Beheshti Hospital, Kashan, Iran. A total of 25 older adults with chronic diseases were recruited by purposive sampling. Data were generated by semi-structured interviews and continued until data saturation. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded by MAXQDA7 software. Data were analyzed based on Graneheim and Lundman approach. Results: Three main themes were extracted from the data including achieving spiritual transcendence (approaching God, appreciate the beauty around); creating peace and balance (controlling the inner stress, maintaining solidarity of family); overcoming the disease (compliance with treatment, building effective interpersonal relationships). Conclusion: The themes indicated that effective interventions such as teaching stress management, communication skills, and adherence to treatment should be provided by healthcare providers and policy makers to improve the resilience of the older adults with chronic diseases.
