Abstract:

Background and Aim: Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases in adolescents and young adults. Although acne do not physically disable the patient, it can cause significant psychological morbidities. The disease etiology is not fully understood; however, there are several factors involved in the pathogenesis. The aim of this study is to investigate the seasonal variation of acne vulgaris in patients referred to skin clinic of Shohaday-e-Tajrish Hospital in Tehran in 2017. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study in patients diagnosed with acne vulgaris by a dermatologist. One-hundred three eligible patients were enrolled in the study. The severity of acne was graded as mild, moderate or severe. In addition to the demographic data, information on the acne severity and changes in the acne severity in summer and winter had been recorded. Results: The average age of 103 acne patients was 24. 68± 6. 77 years. Sixty-eight patients were female and 35 cases were male. Fifteen (14. 6%) patients had mild acne, 55 (53. 4%) cases had moderate acne and 33 (32%) subjects had severe disease. In the summer, symptoms improved in 34 (33%) patients, worsened in 18 (17. 5%) patients, and remained unchanged in 51 (49. 5%) cases. In winter, symptoms improved in 15 (14. 6%) patients, worsened in 37 (35. 9%) patients, and remained unchanged in 51 (49. 5%) patients (P=0. 001). There was no significant relationship between changes in the severity of acne in winter or summer with age, age of the disease onset or duration or severity of acne (P>0. 05). Conclusion: In the present study, the number of patients with acne exacerbation in winter was significantly higher than that in summer. This may highlight the important role of winter in increasing the acne severity; however, more comprehensive studies with more sample sizes are still needed in different geographical areas.

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Cosmetic surgery as a special and common form of bodybuilding culture has always been a controversial topic in contemporary society. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of emotion-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy with mindfulness based cognitive therapy on body image and cognitive fusion in adolescent girls seeking cosmetic surgery. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental intervention study with pretest-posttest design with control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all female secondary school students in the 1st District of Tehran in the academic year 1397-98. From this community, 30 students were selected based on cluster sampling and randomly divided into three groups: 10 in the first group, 10 in the second group and 10 in the control group (8 sessions with mindfulness programs occasionally). Data were gathered through Multidimensional Self-Body Questionnaire (MBSRQ), Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ) and multivariate analysis of covariance. Results: The results showed that cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness treatment were effective in improving the body image of adolescent girls seeking cosmetic surgery (P<0. 05) and there was no significant difference between the two treatments (P<0. 662). Conclusion: Cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness therapy are both effective to improve body image and reduce cognitive interference.

Abstract:

Introduction: Medial canthus area, as one of most common sites of facial skin cancers, is notified for reconstruction. There are numerous reconstructive options to cover resulted skin defects, which have their own advantages and disadvantages. Here, we decided to present our experience in medial canthal area with amazing result. Case Report: A 47-year-old man with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of right medial canthus, without extra involvement, was admitted. Following lesion excision with safe margin, the resulted skin defect in 30 mm diameter was reconstructed with full thickness skin graft from posterior auricular area. Several months later, it was really difficult to find scar or operated skin, as supported by complete patient`s satisfaction. Conclusion: The space between eyes has unbelievable aesthetic and social importance. Any added scar or incision to this area is always challenging. It seems full thickness skin graft-if harvested from proper donor site-can be acceptable in long term aesthetic outcome compared to other reconstructive options.
