Background: The effects of non-invasive physical agents on wound and bone fracture healing have been considered by investigators of different medical fields. Several studies have been conducted about the effects of magnetic field on bone fracture healing. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pulsed magnetic fields on healing of tibial bone lesion in rabbits. Methods: This experimental study was performed in Shahid Beheshti University of medical sciences in 2014. Eight New Zealand male rabbits were divided into control (with bone lesion) and experimental (with bone lesion and under pulsed magnetic field therapy) groups. A 4×10 cm bone lesion with 2 mm depth was made by surgery on both tibias of each rabbit. One month after surgery, the rabbits in the experimental group underwent 75 Hz pulsed magnetic field therapy with 4 mT intensity in lesion site for 30 days and 4 hours a day. Forty, 50 and 60 days after surgery, bone healing was evaluated with digital radiographs and bone density was measured in lesion sites. Data were analyzed using T-test.Findings: Mean relative bone density in lesion sites was 138.50, 150.73 and 168.30 for 8 bit grey scale in the experimental group during three consecutive imaging and showed %17.89, %15.46 and %16.59 increase in comparison with the control group. Conclusion: With regards to the results, it seems that pulsed magnetic field therapy improves healing of bone fracture through increasing bone density in fracture site and can be used after orthopedic surgeries.

Background: Treatment of waste air containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using cheap and environmentally friendly methods is one of active fields in air pollution control. Objective: The aim of this study was to treat air containing triethylamine (TEA) vapor using biotrickling filter inoculated with microbial species decomposing TEA. Methods: This experimental study was conducted in the School of Health affiliated to Qazvin University of Medical Sciences in 2014. Biotreatment was performed with biotrickling filter inoculated with microbial species decomposing TEA for two months. The biotrickling filter was set up with air containing TEA as the sole source of carbon, at Empty Bed Residence Times (EBRT) of 36 sec, and inlet concentration of 84 ppm. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.Findings: Treatment of TEA contaminated air was made after an adaptation period of 11 days. Despite an increase in mass loading to 111 g/m3/h, TEA was eliminated with 109 g/m3/h capacity and 94-100% removal efficiency by zero order kinetics. Elimination capacity and removal efficiency were close to each other and confirmed109 g/m3/h as loading region with critical elimination capacity. Conclusion: With regards to the results, it is possible to treat air containing TEA vapor in biotrickling filter.

Abstract:

Background: The tuberculin test is one of the available tests to detect latent tuberculosis. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of latent tuberculosis in students of Qazvin University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a total of 213 medical sciences students by census method in 2014. The tuberculin test was performed for all students. Induration of 10 mm or greater was considered as positive. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, T-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and regression analysis.Findings: The prevalence of latent tuberculosis was 14.6%. The mean induration in students with history of exposure to tuberculosis was significantly different from students without history of exposure. The association of exposure to tuberculosis and positive tuberculin test was statistically significant. Age and body mass index were poorly correlated with the size of induration (r= 0.166 and 0.146, respectively). In the regression analysis, only contact with tuberculosis patients was independent predictor of positive tuberculin test. Conclusion: With regards to the results, it seems that the most important factor for positive tuberculin test is a history of contact with tuberculosis patients in medical sciences student. Increasing mean induration size with age may be due to increased contact with subjects infected with tuberculosis.

Abstract:

In the past decade, pulmonary dysfunction has been reported due to treatment with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) in patients suffering from rejection of organ transplantation or aplastic anemia. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the common infections in recipients of organ transplantation. In this report, a 46 years old man underwent treatment with ATG due to rejection of kidney transplantation and developed pulmonary infiltration. Cytomegalovirus antigen load was raised in the serum. After discontinuation of ATG and treatment with ganciclovir, fibrosis and reduction of lung volume was developed. The resultant fibrosis was completely resolved after one month and the general condition of the patient was improved. In conclusion, fibrotic pattern in pulmonary HRCT cannot prove the irreversibility of the lesion.
