Background: In different studies, the relationship of emotional intelligence with psychological sign and symptoms and it's subscales in life and inter-personal relationship in adulthood has been proved. Our purpose in this study was to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence and mental health in adolescents. Methods: This study was done on 185 students (101 boys and 84 girls) in Isfahan city, Iran. Emotional intelligence questionnaire was used to investigate emotional intelligence in target group and for evaluation of psychological sign and symptoms, we used Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90R) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient. Findings: There was no significant difference in prevalence of emotional intelligence scales in different sexes and ages. Emotional intelligence had inverse relationship with psychological symptoms parameter including aggression (P=0.013), obsession (P=0.037), somatization (P=0.040), depression (P=0.010) and phobia (P=0.030) in both girls and boys. This inverse relationship existed after exclusion of age and sex as confounding variables. Conclusion: In present study, it was determined that emotional intelligence had invert relationship with psychological symptoms subscales including aggression, obsession, somatization, depression, and phobia. These improvements revealed the necessity of research and training of emotional intelligence in schools.

Abstract:

Background: One of the influent factors in successful kidney transplantation is complete drug compliance in patients; but some of the studies had shown that some patients are not fully compliant because of several reasons including psychological factors. This study aimed to assess the relationship of the drug compliance in patient with kidney transplantation with psychological factors including depression, anxiety and coping strategies. Methods: In a cross-sectional study during 2015-2016 in Alzahra and Noor and Aliasghar Hospitals in Isfahan, Iran, 85 patients with kidney transplantation were assessed in terms of relationship of drug compliance with psychological factors such as depression, anxiety and coping strategies using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Brief COPE (coping strategy) inventory and the simplified medication adherence questionnaire (SMAQ). Findings: In this study, 43 patients (50.6%) were compliant and 42 patients (49.4%) were noncompliant. The mean score of anxiety showed no significant difference between the two groups (P=0.210), but the mean score of depression was significantly higher in noncompliant group (P=0.043). The mean score of religious sub scale of coping strategies was higher in compliant group significantly (P=0.039).Conclusion: According to this study, drug compliance in patients with kidney transplantation is related to depression significantly and diagnosis and treatment of depression is very important in these patients.

Abstract:

Background: Decreased physical activity and blood pressure both are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Aerobic training and grape seed extract has a very high potential in reducing or inhibiting of blood pressure and double product. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of aerobic training and grape seed extract on some cardiovascular functional indexes in non-active men. Methods: 40 healthy untrained male students with a mean age of 22.60±0.98 years, mean weight of 76.07±5.11 kg and body fat of 18.06±1.64 percent were divided randomly in 4 equal groups of training-supplement, training-placebo, supplement and control. Aerobic training program consisted of three sessions of running per week with the target of 60-85 percent heart rate for 8 weeks. Before and after the intervention, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and rate-pressure product (RPP) were measured. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey methods. Findings: Aerobic training along with grape seed extract consumption significantly reduced heart rate, systolic blood pressure and RPP in training-supplement and supplement groups (P<0.05), significantly reduced HR and rate-pressure product in training-placebo group (P<0.05), and did not significantly changed diastolic blood pressure in any groups (P>0.05). However, no significant change was observed in the control group in any of the parameters (P>0.05).Conclusion: The results showed that 8 weeks of aerobic training either alone (training-placebo) or in combination with grape seed extract (training-supplement) and grape seed extract alone consumption (supplement), reduce cardiovascular functional indexes in non-active men.

Abstract:

Background: Poisoning is one of the most common causes of visiting the clinics by patients in each year. Regarding the differences between epidemiologic patterns of poisoning in various points of the world, this study aimed to assess the characters of poisoned patients who visited hospitals in Yazd city, Iran, during 1 year. Methods: In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, all the patients who visited hospitals of Yazd city for the reason of poisoning from March 21, 2015 till July 22, 2015 were entered using census method. Age, gender, education level, type of poisoner, location of living, and type of poisoning were extracted from the patients’ files by using a researcher-made data collection form. Data were analyzed using chi-square test at the significant level of P<0.05. Findings: Among 460 poisoned patients, 269 persons (58.0%) were men and 191 persons (41.5%) were women. The most frequent educational level of the poisoned patients was diploma (in 181 persons 39.3%). The most common cause of poisoning was involuntary (327 patients, 71.1%). Poisoning was more in spring and summer. The most used poisoner was medicine (178 patients, 38%). The most common age group of poisoned patients was 25 to 39 years (162 patients, 35.2%) and most of them were living in urban areas (451 persons, 98.0%).Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the highest rate of poisoning was among urban youth and with unintentional causes. The most main poisoners were medicines. Educating the families for using medicines accurately and elimination of additional medicines or keeping them in safe places at home is suggested.

Abstract:

Background: The use of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) for infants is increasing. But, there is not sufficient research on the anesthetic drugs used for infants whose airway is supported with laryngeal mask airway. This study aimed to compare the respiratory complications of propofol and isoflurane in these infants. Methods: Ninety 6- to 24-months old infants undergoing inguinal herniorrhaphy under general anesthesia with laryngeal mask airway were randomly allocated into two groups of 45. The first group received propofol and the second received isoflurane as maintenance of anesthesia. Peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2), end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) were recorded every 5 minutes. In addition, for each patient MAP, SpO2, respiratory complication, nausea and vomiting were recorded every 15 minutes in the recovery room.Findings: Patients receiving propofol had significantly lower ETCO2, heart rate and MAP (P<0.01 for all). SPO2 was lower at 15th, 25th, 30th minutes of the surgery and on admission, 15th and 45th minute of recovery in patients receiving isoflurane; but the differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Regarding the results, propofol is probably a better choice for maintenance of general anesthesia with laryngeal mask airway in infants.
