Abstract: 

Purpose: The present study has been done to determine the impact of storytelling on creativity of children of 5 to 6 years old as the members of Imam Ali Public Library of Yazd city in Iran. Methodology: we used experimental research method with a pre-test and post-test plan as well as control group and a random selection. The research population included 60 members, 5-to-6 years. old children who were the members of Imam Ali Public Library of Yazd city in Iran, in such a way that 30 children were randomly put in control group and 30 others in experimental group. The data were gathered through pictorial form B of Torrance test of creative thinking, and they were analyzed by one-way and two-way Covariance test. Findings: The mean value of creativity of experimental group who received storytelling variable was 34 percent more than the mean value of creativity among the control group. Therefore, storytelling effect on creativity of pre-elementary children was 0.34. Besides, the storytelling had a 21 percent positive effect on the initiative. Moreover, the expansion rate of the experimental group in post-test was 19 percent more than the pre-test. Likewise, we tested research hypothesis and the results showed that there was a significant relationship between storytelling and creativity growth for pre-elementary children, as storytelling raised initiative and boosted the expansion of ideas. Originality/Value: The value of this research circles around the demonstration of the effect of storytelling for children on their creativity and potentiality of imagination. One can infer from results that storytelling in pedagogical in informational foundations like public libraries should be emphasized.

Abstract: 

Purpose: In digital age, web applications work as machines that swallow time rapidly. A new generation tendency to use these tools for entertaining and information gathering has changed their habits in type of selected materials and reading practices. In other words, although users currently receive information from internet, they have increasingly become superficial readers who have a little interest to read deeply in digital format. This unwillingness not only changes reading habits of young adults but also transforms their web browsing and information processing. The present study aims at the investigation of the effect of digital environment on users. reading habits. Methodology: We used a case study approach and Survey method was used. Also, questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. The population included all undergraduate students in all disciplines (=1000) who study in Toos Institute of Higher Education..100 students were selected as a sample study based on accessibility principle. Findings: The results indicated that participants commonly believed that internet increases interactive reading (=56 percent), expanded reading (=44 percent), and superficial reading (=49 percent). In contrast, it reduces concentrated reading (=34 percent) and in-depth reading (=28 percent). In addition, internet increases reading in the formats such as news (=63 percent), general knowledge (=85 percent), special literature (=63 percent), and pornography (=42 percent). In contrast, it has no any significant impact on religious literature (=35 percent) and literary literature (=40 percent). Value: Value of this research lies in its effort to show altered reading habits, methods and formats in digital environment. It can be a useful source for accommodation with new interests and find new methods for deepen reading in these new behaviors.

Abstract: 

Purpose: This research aims at the investigation of the role of public libraries of Kerman region in Iran, on promoting users' reading culture. Methodology: The research was done through a survey method. We Used Shein’s Three Layer model (Values, norms, and rituals) to survey the role of public libraries on reading culture. The data were collected by a questionnaire designed for the study. The population of research included all more than15 year’s old accredited users of grade 4 and above public libraries of Kerman region and 373 members as sample were determined and selected randomly. One sample t-test, repeated measures, independent-sample t-test and ANOVA were used to test the hypotheses. Findings: Results showed that the role of the public libraries of Kerman on promoting two layers, including beliefs and effects, was more than average and on promoting the layer of rules was around the average (number 3). Overall, these libraries could not meet the desired level for promoting the readers' reading culture (80 percent of desired elements). No significant difference was observed between the mean scores of the two layers of beliefs and effects, but the role of the public libraries was significantly different comparing the layer of rules with other two layers. According to the sex, various age groups and varied degrees of education variables, no significant difference was observed. Originality/Value: Value of this research is observable in demonstration of weakness of public libraries of Kerman region in Iran in increasing reading culture of habitants. Likewise, this research cleared that public libraries are weak in rule making for incrementing reading habits of people.

Abstract: 

Purpose: In this Research, we aim to evaluate the effect of cultural activities of public librarians on promoting the circulation rate of Goharshad middle school library. Methodology: This research implemented by quasi-experimental method using One.group pre-test and post-test design. Two questionnaires are used as tool measuring book loan rate of students before and after cultural activities. We used 4 questions in pre-test and 8 questions in post-test. The population of this research included 86 students in three classes. To examine the hypotheses, we used Chi-Square and Paired Samples t test. Findings: The results showed that respondents in pre-test stated that they book loan rate is Twice a month (mean score 38, 44.2 percent). After implementation of cultural programs for students, they stated that book loan rate of them increased around 3 time a month (mean score 45, 52.3 percent). Besides, we used one sample t test for measuring the significance of difference between mean scores in pre-test and post-test and we found that the difference is statistically significant. Likewise, second hypothesis of the research was statistically approved (Pvalue of Chi-Square test=0.006<0.01). Originality/Value: this research is original because of clearing the effect of cultural activities of public librarians that work in a public library around a school on circulation rate of school library and book loan measure of students that is a sign of increase in book reading behavior.

Abstract: 

Purpose: In this paper, the goal is offering a research report about viewpoints of Sari City public libraries in Iran about what factors can cause an increase in book reading habits of the inhabitants of this city. Methodology: I used survey method for achieving the goal. Population of study was all users of Sari city public libraries that consisted of 15000 members.385 members selected by simple random method on the basis of Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size table. Findings: Findings showed that 10 factors influences reading habit behavior of Sari citizens that two of them are very highly scored: 1. Shortage in time and 2.Low level of income. Other findings showed that there was statistically significant relationship between viewpoints of users about encouraging factors and their educational level, age and income. But there was no significant relationship between viewpoints of users about encouraging factors and their job and gender. Originality/Value: Value of this research lied in its effort to demonstrate two critical factors that affect book reading habits of Sari citizens in Iran. More deliberation can show us that these are factors outside of the reading process system that can label them as environmental or social factors.

Abstract: 

Purpose: In this paper, the main focus is on the generalization of doctrine of social exchange theory, precisely Homans. opinions, to book reading problem in Iran. This theory has faculties that can help us to better understanding the reading problem barriers. Methodology: the type of this paper is analytical and I used library research method for achieving the purpose. Findings: Social world, according to Homans (1958), consists of people that are engaging in exchange reward routinely. In social exchange theory, this engagement referred to two main characteristics of human being, namely tendency to pleasure & avoiding pain, and rationality. On the basis of these two characteristics, Homans introduces 6 principle that demonstrates dimensions of social exchange theory that includes stimulus proposition, success proposition, value proposition, Deprivation-Satiation Proposition, Aggression-Approval Proposition and rationality proposition. Each of the propositions have some recommendations for improvement of reading culture. At end, I recommended three pace for achieving the goal, namely 1. Deep believe to critical role of reading, 2. Getting reward to providers of reading texts, and 3. Designing exhibitions for reading. Originality/Value: this article can be regarded as valuable for trying in generalization of social exchange theory to improvement of reading behavior as a social act.

Abstract: 

Purpose: In this paper, we aimed at the identification of elements that causes problems in the way of effective distribution of children and adolescent books. We used publishers. viewpoints that are specialists in the field of children books publishing. Methodology: mixed method design was used as a structure that consisted of qualitative and quantitative sections. In qualitative section, 11 children publishers were selected purposefully from Tehran city as a sample. By using semi-structured interviews, data were collected and were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The extracted indicators from interviews, reduced as questionnaire questions. All members of the cultural association of children and adolescent book publishers (55 members) filled the questionnaires. Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was conceivably 0.82. Validity of questions approved through related professionals. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Findings: Children books distribution problems in Iran from professional publishers. viewpoints was categorized in the five main categories and 13 subcategories. The five main categories were: Cultural infrastructure (mean rate of 4.19), financial and economic barriers (mean rate of 4.07), organizational and trade barriers (mean rate of 4.05), information and communication barriers (mean rate of 4.00), and incompatibility in general policies of the government and state institutions (mean rate of 3.57). Originality/Value: originality of the research specifiable trough the identification of main and secondary elements of distribution barriers in children and adolescent book publishing field that can be a guide for problem solving.

Abstract: 

Purpose: In this article, we aimed at the evaluation of children and young adult's Persian encyclopedias, published during 2006-2011, with reference works evaluation criteria. Methodology: Evaluative research method was used for directing research. The population of study was 150 titles of published encyclopedias. The tool for evaluation was a researcher-made checklist that gathered through library research. Findings: findings showed that 45 titles of 150 ones (30 percent) were general encyclopedias and 105 titles were special encyclopedias. In the year 2009, highest number of encyclopedias was published (34 titles). Besides, 71.5 percent of them were special works and 28.5 percent were general works. The research checklist had 12 components that compared against encyclopedias. In general, in most of the translated works, the aim of work had not been mentioned and about 60 percent of them were without indexes. Also, in 63.6 percent cases of written. translated works and 97 percent of translated works, we didn.t see any guide for use. Likewise, results showed that the quality of written encyclopedias were generally better than written-translated ones.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: With regard to some lacks in the field of evaluation criteria for children and young adult Persian encyclopedias, this study can help reference librarians to evaluate these types of reference works effectively and can be a start point for gradual complementation of related criteria.
