Recognition of the Spatial Organization and Physical Structure of Cheshmeh Ali Historic Garden According to Qajar Period Documents

Abstract

The Garden of Cheshmeh Ali Damghan with an area of about 1. 2 hectares is a unique example of remaining water gardens in Iran, which has been formed in the northwest of Damghan, near-permanent springs. By emphasizing the spatial structure and importance of this garden in the history of Iranian gardening and intending to recreate the structure of the historical garden in the Qajar period, the present study has identified its different perspectives. Using historical studies method and a descriptive-analytical approach, the study examines the original writings and pictorial documents of the Qajar period and tries to explain its historical structure by documenting all available evidence and analyzing and matching first-hand data with the current situation. According to research findings, in 1783, Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar built the first building near the spring. The reason for choosing this place was the proximity of Cheshmeh Ali to Gorgan (the place of the Qajar tribe) and the suitable nature of the region. In 1802, during the expedition to Khorasan, Fath Ali Shah Qajar stayed in the Agha Mohammad Khan building and issued an order to repair this building, organize the reservoir, build the main pavilion and mosque, and build a garden tower and rampart. With the presence of Nasser al-Din Shah in the garden during two trips to Khorasan (1866 and 1883 AD), repairs were made in the complex by his order. According to the pictures of Abdullah Khan Qajar, the garden in this period had a brick fence (3 meters high), and five circular towers (5. 5 meters high), and the inner (northern) area of the main pavilion was separated from the southern pool by a framed wall. With the death of Nasser al-Din Shah in 1896, the garden of Cheshmeh Ali, like many works of the Qajar period, was removed from the attention of the kings of this dynasty and was reduced to physical destruction.
