Abstract

In this paper three methods to construct pictorial dictionaries for printed Farsi SUB-WORDs are presented. The features used are CHARACTERISTIC LOCI, FOURIER DESCRIPTORs and upper contour labels. In each method, the body of a SUB-WORD is described by corresponding features. Based on this description, the entry for that SUB-WORD is defined. The SUB-WORDs with same entry, constitute their own neighborhood within the dictionary.In one experiment, the proposed methods were tested on a set of 3675 images from 147 sub- words of length 2. The mean neighborhood sizes for different dictionaries were 18.6, 23.92 and 17.79, respectively. In another experiment, on a set of 2790 SUB-WORDs of lengths 2, 3 and 4, in 5 fonts and 5 sizes, the mean neighborhood size and the number of entries were 74.37 and 271, respectively.
