Abstract

FENNEL is one of the most important and oldest aromatic plants in Iran that belongs to Apiaceae family. It is used in medicinal industria. There is arid and semiarid regions in Iran that have SALINE WATER and soil and this is the main problem for cultivating. In order to evaluate the percentage and the rate of seed GERMINATION of FENNEL under saline condition, an experiment was conducted in 2002 in Esfahan. The experimental design was a completely randomized, with 4 replications and 7 treatments of SALINE WATER [EC= 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 dS/m]. Analysis variance showed that the treatments had significant effect (P£0.01) on the percentage and the rate of seed GERMINATION. Means comparison showed that based on mean percentage of GERMINATION, treatments were grouped in 4 classes. The highest and the lowest percentage of GERMINATION occurred in EC=1 and EC=15 dS/m with an average of %91 and %1 respectively. Based on the rate of GERMINATION, treatments were grouped in 5 classes. The control had the highest rate of GERMINATION by an average of 9.75 (seed germinated per day) and EC=15 dS/m the lowest rate of GERMINATION by an average of 0.05 (seed germinated per day).
