Abstract

In order to evaluate the effect of different PLANT DENSITIES on YIELD and YIELD components in two GRAIN SORGHUM cultivars, this experiment was conducted, at the Research farm Azad-Islamic University of Khorasgan, located at Khatoon Abad village, Isfahan. The experimental design was a split plot in completely randomized block with four replications. Five PLANT DENSITIES (100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 thousand plants per hectar) and two cultivars (K1 and ICSV-89037) were considered as the main and subplots, respectively. The characters to evaluate in this experiment, include; grain YIELD, number of heads/m2, number of grains per head, 100 seed-weight, length of head, biological YIELD and harvest index. The effects of densities on the grain YIELD were statistically significant. Maximum grain YIELD was obtained at the highest plant density, but, it was not significantly different from the YIELD at density of 250 thousands plant/ha. Among the YIELD components, the number of heads/m2 were influenced by plant density. ICSV-89037 was significantly superior to the grain YIELD. Grain. YIELD of ICSV-89037 with 14 percent humidity (14.5 t/h) was significantly grate than K1 cultivar (11 t/h). In this experiment, variation in grain YIELD was related to the number of heads/m2 and 100 seed-weight, respectively and number of heads/m2 explained 74% of this variability. According to the results obtained, the optimum plant density to achieve the maximum grain YIELD was 250 thousand plants/ha for K1 and ICSV-89037.
