TRANSFER OF HEAVY METALS FROM THE TAILINGS DAM AND ITS REDUCTION USING ACTIVATED CARBON PLANT, BAUXITE JAJARM

Abstract

 Mine tailing dams may cause pollution or make various problems for the environment. Heavy metals play a major role in the destruction and degradation of natural habitat and have harmful effects on the human health. The first part of the current paper examines the factors affecting the transfer of heavy metals from a solid to the liquid phase. Performing LEACHING tests associated with reservoir revealed that only VANADIUM has a high concentration among the heavy metals, at such a high pH, and the maximum transfer to the aqueous phase occurs at pH=12 , temperature of 60oC , time of 8 hours, and the solid/liquid ratio of 1. In the second part of the paper, the parameters of the solution regarding the removal of VANADIUM are discussed. The maximum absorbance of VANADIUM by ACTIVATED CARBON takes place at pH=7, 6 hours, and the concentration of carbon is 0.6.
