Abstract

After NITRIDING of STAINLESS STEEL by using plasma method at low temperature a duplex hard layer (YN1 premier layer and YN2 sublayer) is produced on the steel surface. About the formation of these sublayer differences hypotheses was proposed in the literatures. Some of them suggested that the formation of YN2 phase is caused by stress-assisted diffusion. Some of them proposed that the YN2 sublayer is formed during the slow cooling of the substrate after NITRIDING. The result of this paper show that the formation of YN2 layeris not connected to the cooling state and stress- ssisted diffusion. It is result of ion bombardment of cleaning procedure.
