Title

INFLUENCE OF TALC ADDITION ON THE COLD STRENGTH AND REDUCIBILITY OF SINTERS PRODUCED IN ESFAHAN STEEL COMPANY

Abstract

An important characteristic of a SINTER production is its REDUCIBILITY. This factor must be accompanied by good cold STRENGTH. In this paper, the effect of TALC addition on REDUCIBILITY and cold STRENGTH of SINTERs were investigated. For this aim, after mixing burden materials in a rotary disc, SINTERing process of mixtures were carried out at 1150°C. SINTERed products were immersed in a coke bed and reduced at temperatures 950°C, 1050°C and 1150°C. The reducing times were 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Cold STRENGTH of SINTERs was evaluated with tumbler test. Results showed that the cold STRENGTH of SINTERs increased with TALC addition up to 6%wt. After this amount the STRENGTH gradually decreased with increasing TALC content. The XRD analysis of SINTERs revealed that the amount of 2CaO.SiO2 phase decreased with TALC additions. The results of reduction tests showed that REDUCIBILITY of SINTERs decreased with TALC. Also adding TALC to the SINTERs resulted in a decrease in the maximum reduction degree at 950°C, 1050°C and 1150°C. The maximum amount of cold STRENGTH of SINTERs could be achieved by 6%wt TALC addition. The REDUCIBILITY of SINTERs hadn't been affected by this amount, significantly. It was shown by others that the most suitable amount of MgO in SINTERs or pellets was 4%wt. Adding 5%wt TALC resulted in a 3.4%wt MgO in SINTERs which was in the suitable range. It was concluded that addition of 5%wt TALC along with 6.8% moisture could increased the STRENGTH without significant effect in the REDUCIBILITY of SINTERs.
