Abstract

Understanding and recognizing the society about value, place, and role of religious political authority and the People in Islamic governance, along with clarifying the status and role of the Absolute Guardianship of the Jurist (velayat-e motlaqeh-ye faqih) and the People in the Islamic System within Imam Khomeini’s political thought, is a significant and necessary endeavor. This study, employing a descriptive-analytical method, seeks to answer the question: What role and position do the Absolute Guardianship of the Jurist and the People hold in the Islamic System according to Imam Khomeini’s political thought? The main finding of this research is that the legitimacy of the Velayat-e Faqih in Imam Khomeini’s political thought is appointive, based on narrative and religious arguments. Therefore, the vote of the People has no effect on the legitimacy of the principle of Velayat-e Faqih, however, the People hold authority in selecting the jurist-ruler and supervising him. Accordingly, the legitimacy of the Vali-ye faqih is ultimately realized through the Assembly of Experts, who are chosen by the People. In Imam Khomeini’s political outlook, the most important pillars for establishing an Islamic government and the political power of the state are the votes of the People—within the framework of Islamic law. The innovation of this research lies in explaining the role and position of the guardianship of the jurist and the People.
