Title

FRACTAL ANALYSIS OF VELOCITY TURBULANCE TIME SERIES USING DEFRENDED FLUCTUATION METLD

Pages

  13-23

Abstract

Turbulence plays an important role in the transport phenomena in river engineering including mass and momentum transfer. In spite of several researches that have been conducted on this phenomenon, there is no exact method to model turbulence effects. It is due to the fact that the essence of this process has not been completely discovered. In this article, FRACTAL perspective is applied to assess the turbulence behavior. Therefore, an efficient FRACTAL method, entitled detrended FLUCTUATION ANALYSIS, was employed to deal with time series of VELOCITY FLUCTUATIONs. In addition, multi-FRACTAL nature of turbulence was investigated using this method. The results indicated that the FLUCTUATION exponent of stream-wise VELOCITY was larger than those obtained for the both span-wise the vertical. However, the closer the measurement were macle to the channel bed, the lesser differences were occurred between FLUCTUATION exponents, indicating the role of viscosity. Moreover, the results of multi-FRACTAL ANALYSIS illustrated that in the turbulence time series, the generalized Hurst exponent (h(q)) depend strictly on q. Finally, the decreasing order of h(q) with respect to q indicates that the small FLUCTUATIONs are taking place more than the large ones.
