Abstract

Introduction: Population growth and increased human activities have led to a reduction in water resources and an intensification of climate change. These changes, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, have resulted in decreased rainfall and increased temperatures, severely impacting groundwater resources and qanats. Qanats, as ancient irrigation systems and cultural heritage in South Khorasan province, play a vital role in providing water, supporting the economy, and sustaining local communities. However, climate change and human factors such as poor water resource management have led to a decline in qanat discharge. The objective of this research is to thoroughly examine the impact of climate change on qanat discharge in Birjand County and to propose management strategies for the protection and sustainability of these resources...
