Pages

  45-54

Abstract

ARASBARAN NOMADIC PEOPLE, mainly living in the East-Azerbaijan province, have common tribal roots with Shahsavans. VERNI-bafi (Verni weaving) is a unique and exquisite art of this people. VERNI neither is Carpet nor Kilim; But rather a flat woven floor covering with no knots in its structure.Verni has considered by art lovers for many centuries because of its patterns, coloration, harmony between color and pattern, either used as a mat and decorate rooms, tents and walls or sometimes as a coverlet and horse blankets and even used for making saddlebag or satchel. For VERNI weaving usually use cotton warp and thin wool woof.In this research, various VERNI DESIGN structures categorized in 7 individual groups, i.e. Gul, Khana-khana, Sodjakhana, Ghabirgha, Yilan-yilan, combined DESIGNs and adopted DESIGNs. Then each DESIGN was investigated for its SYMBOLic meanings and characters. This investigation was based on field research as well as consultation with experts in this field. The photographs have been taken by author in 1390 and patterns were operated with appropriate software.
