Abstract

The purpose of this article is studying the place of LAYOUT DESIGN and its role in the illustrated books of TIMURID period. The main goal is finding a visual relation between text and illustration in the manuscripts of this time; therefore, we consider LAYOUT DESIGNs of some examples were texts illustratioLns are together and text were considered structurally and synthetically. It is obvious that the principles of layout were very different on that time, but you can see that artists considered them naturally and they made a very fine, logistic and creative relation between different parts of the page. In these illustrated books artist used layout in order to represent some unique conceptions of Iranian illustration such as simultaneity, perspective, decoration, space, etc, especially, in some important works of art like Baysonghori Shahnameh.All of these achievements were beholden to a good management, from founding library and assigning someone as its director to gathering artists together and eventually defining duties of each person by the king to do layout of a book lead to created abiding works of art in that era.
