Abstract

Herbage yield, leaf dry matter and crude protein yields in seven varieties of ALFALFA namly: Messasers, Yazdi, Maupa, Hamadani, Kerrisary, Cody and Simerchenskaya were compared under rainfed conditions using a complete randomized block design in Eslamabad rangeland research station in Kermanshah during 1991-1993. The results showed significant difference between varieties for all traits. Cody and Hamadani with an average of 6.52 and 6.27 ton/ha/year, respectively, were the high yielding varieties. For leaf dry matter yield and crude protein yield, Cody had the highest production, but it had no significant difference with Hamadani, Kerissary and Maupa varieties. For plant heights, while the Hamadani was the highest, Yazdi was the shortest varieties. The best variety of ALFALFA for reseeding rainfed area in the west of Iran with the annual participation of 475 mm or similar region, are Cody and Hamadani that have high yield and good adaptation.Cody with the highest leaf dry matter yield and protein yield could be a good alternative for Hamadani that are being used now in the west of Iran.
