EFFECT OF PRETREATMENT OF HUMIC ACID ON GERMINATION AND EARLY SEEDLING GROWTH OF MAIZE (ZEA MAYS L.)

Abstract

SEED PRETREATMENT using HUMIC ACID possibly increase GERMINATION rate and final GERMINATION. In order to study the effect of different levels coating of HUMIC ACID on GERMINATION and seedling growth response of MAIZE (Zea mays L.) a factorial experiment based on Completely Randomized Design with four replicates of 25 seeds was conducted in the Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, in year 2009. The first factor was tow seed lots, the second factor was different levels of HUMIC ACID (0, H2O, 40, 200, 1000, 5000 mg/l). The final GERMINATION, mean GERMINATION time (MGT), normal seedlings, seedlings length and seedling dry weight, were investigated. The results showed that different levels of HUMIC ACID had significant effect on GERMINATION parameters such as MGT, seedling length and seedling dry weight, but no significant effect on final GERMINATION and number of normal seedlings. The highest and lowest MGT observed at 40 and 5000 mg/l HUMIC ACID treatments respectively. The highest seedling length achived in 40 mg/l HUMIC ACID treatment. The maximum seedling dry weight was obtained at 40 mg/l HUMIC ACID treatment. Generally, it seems that application of HUMIC ACID improves MAIZE GERMINATION parameters.
