Title

EFFECT OF NITROGEN ON GRAIN YIELD OF BREAD AND DURUM WHEAT GENOTYPES UNDER TERMINAL HEAT STRESS CONDITIONS

Pages

  53-67

Abstract

In order to study the effects of NITROGEN levels on grain yield and yield components of WHEAT genotypes under optimum and post-anthesis heat stress conditions, two separate field experiments were conducted in delayed and optimum sowing dates in Ahvaz, Iran in 2007 and 2008. The experimental site had a moderate winter and dry, hot summer. Plants with delayed sowing date experienced heat stress post-anthesis. Each split-polt experiment had a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The N application rates were (50, 100, and 150 KgNha-1) assigned in the main-plots. Sub-plots consisted of six bread and durum WHEAT genotypes. Results indicated that, Compared with optimum conditions, heat stress after anthesis reduced grain per m-square, grain yield, grain weight, and HI, 12.4%, 24%, 31% and 10%, respectively. GY reduction under post-anthesis heat stress conditions was due to significant grain weight reduction. The highest and the lowest stress susceptibility index for grain yield was in Stare and D-83-8 genotypes, respectively. Genotypes that headed late such as Star and D-84-5, in general, had higher TGW and GY reduction than cultivars that headed earlier under post-anthesis heat stress conditions.
