Abstract

Historical studies of plazas show the fact, as compared to past, that nowadays’ plazashave the more significant role in the structure of cities. Moreover, they influence more onshape and organization of urban environments. Studies show that plazas are considered intwo ways, based on the aesthetic and their function. Since every plaza’s function and usageis altered in time, the purpose of this research is to study both historical and contemporaryfunction of plazas. The assumption is that functions are defined according to needs, andtherefore they were changed over different times.The method of this research is as follow: first, seven principal functions of the plazasare considered as the base of studies, and by the study of documents the function of eachplaza in the past is found. Then survey and comparative method were used to determinethe level of satisfaction of plazas’ functions. In this survey, 1000 respondents, in eachplaza, were asked. Each plaza was checked regarding seven principal functions. By useof T-test, Anova, and Spearman test, 28 hypotheses were examined. First, the relationsbetween age, sex, and cause of presence with the level of satisfaction in seven principalfunctions were considered, and then the level of satisfaction was examined.The results show the highest correlations between age of respondents and the level offinancial satisfaction of plazas, and also correlations between genders of respondents andcultural satisfaction.
