Abstract

Satisfaction and gratification are the result of a perception one has of his/her society, based on positive environmental evaluation and personal experience. Sociability and capability in the creation of required opportunities for SOCIAL INTERACTIONS are of the most important characteristics of urban squares. Raising the quality of constructed spaces results in the citizens' SATISFACTION with them, and thus increases SOCIAL INTERACTIONS in the squares. For the aim of qualitative evaluation, this research identified the factors affecting citizens' SATISFACTION by making comparison between Iran and the West's experiences to lead urban planners and decision-makers towards the enhancement of urban environment, and thus improve citizens' SATISFACTION and SOCIAL INTERACTIONS. It is a descriptive- analytical study, in which 440, over 7 years, citizens of naghshe-e Jahan and Baharestan squares (in Iran), and del Campo and Navona squares (in Italy) were selected. Statistical methods were based on the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and The Kruskal- Wallis test. Based on the results from CFA, out of the 31 SATISFACTION factors, seven factors (namely anatomical-social, physical-median, management, anatomical-sidewall, visual-aesthetic, accessibility-spatial, performance-vitality) are extractable (KMO=0.76, Bartlett's test score of 4548.55, df=45, P<0.001). In general, 55.48% of the overall variance of citizens' SATISFACTION is predictable. The reliability of each factor, based on Cronbach' s alpha, ranged from 0.55 to 0.84. This value was 0.82 for the overall questionnaire. Based on the results from Kruskal- Wallis test, the rating mean of the accessibility- spatial, anatomical-sidewall, and anatomical-median factors in del Campo square, visual-aesthetic and performance-vitality factors in Naghsh-e-Jahan square, and psychological-social and management factors in Navona square were higher than others (P<0.01).
