Abstract

There is a gap between Iran’s past VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE and contemporaryarchitecture. Ignoring the practical characteristics of VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE has createdan unidentified architecture and urban design for the life of new generations in Iran. Themain issue of this research is familiarizing students of architecture with the philosophyof VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE to better understand the environment. Since there are no localobjectives in the syllabus of an undergraduate program of architecture, this article aimsto interject vernacular approaches in the teaching of architectural design basic courses.It aims, particularly, to enhance the creativity of students in architectural basic coursesthrough understanding VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE. The results of this research show thatcontemporary teaching methods, especially in architectural basic courses, caused todisturbance students’ mind and lack of creativity in architectural design. Also the resultsindicate that familiarizing students of architecture with the vernacular materials willprovide an environment in which students can create local ideas for local problems.
