Title

EVALUATION OF SALINITY TOLERANCE OF DIFFERENT BARLEY GENOTYPES AT GERMINATION STAGE

Pages

  69-75

Abstract

Large parts of world land are subjected to SALINITY. One way to exploit the large areas of saline soil is development of salt tolerant plant species. This study was conducted to evaluate the GERMINATION RATE, germination percentage and seedling growth of different BARLEY genotypes as a factorial based on Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replications, at plant physiology lab of Gorgan University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The seeds of 4 BARLEY genotypes: G1=(FRIBERGA/STE//(L.527//BAHTIM-7DL/L.BIRAN/UNA8271//...), G2= (WI2197/CR272-3-4//DIJON3-2-5), G3= (M9878/CARDO//QUINA/3/JAZMIN/4/CEN-B/2*CALI92) and G4=(SHRA) were planted in incubator at three SALINITY levels (control (freshwater), 8 ds/m and 16 dS/m) in (18±20 °C) according to international seed testing association (ISATA). At 7th day, different traits such as number of ROOT, length of ROOT, coleoptile and shoot, and dry weight of ROOT, shoot and seed were determined. Results showed that at high SALINITY, shoot dry weigh decreased. Analysis of variance showed that effect of genotype on ROOT number, ROOT, coleoptile and shoot seedling length, ROOT and seed dry weight and percentage of germination was significant at P=0.01. Finally, it is concluded that G4 was SALINITY sensitive at seedling stage and G1 was known as the SALINITY tolerant genotype.
