DETERMINATION OF BIO-KINETIC COEFFICIENTS FOR WASTEWATER OF IRANIAN CELLULOSE INDUSTRIES USING SBR METHOD

Abstract

 Wastewater from CELLULOSE INDUSTRIES is one of the most important sources of environmental contaminations. WASTEWATER from these industries contains color and high COD which are due to the cellulose fibers and lignin compounds. These materials are not simply degraded biologically and their entrance to the environment can make rather destructive and irreversible effects.In this study, WASTEWATER treatment from three industries, namely: of Iran Wood Fiber (Hassanrood, Guilan), CHUKA Wood & Paper (Rezvanshahr, Guilan) and Linterpak (Behshahr, Mazanderan), in 2 liter batch laboratory scale was investigated. All stages including nutrition, aeration, sediment and discharge were conducted in one system named as Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR). Comparison of the kinetic coefficients obtained for the three WASTEWATER samples have indicated that the WASTEWATER from Hassanrood Wood Fiber was biodegradable easier than the one from CHUKA Wood & Paper and also from Behshahr Linterpak. The results have shown that the reaction rate constant (K), growth yield (Y) and constant growth rate (m) for Iran Wood Fiber are higher than the ones for CHUKA and Linterpar WASTEWATER.Investigation of the sludge changes has shown that with increasing MLSS to about 4400 mg/L, the reaction rate was increased, but with increased MLSS concentrations of higher than 4400 mg/L, no change in the reaction rate constant was observed. It was also shown that the changes in organic loading rate up to COD of 1250 mg/L, the changes in rate constant was low but for COD of over 1250 mg/L, decrease in reaction rate constant was significant.
