A GA-BASED OPTIMUM ROUTE DETERMINATION FOR CONTAINER SHIPS

Abstract

 due to its advantages and strategic importance, the sea container transport is considered, today, as a very important mode of goods transportation that, compared with other modes, has grown considerably. Despite its numerous merits, high volume of information has caused problems in the planning and management of shipping companies that may negatively affect their performance. The proper management of using ships and determining an optimum route for their traffic can reduce the volume of operations and time of displacements of goods in ports and, hence, a decrease in costs and an increase in productivity. This paper proposes a LOGISTIC MODEL appropriate for the voyage management of a fleet of two or more intermediate CONTAINER SHIPS to reduce the transportation costs. The use of this model, that considers ships’ capacities and time priority for goods’ transportation, can specify how many ships of what capacities should be used to carry a known number of containers from a hub port to intermediate ports, which ports they should go to and with what sequence, and which containers they are to load or unload. Having a scenario including such different data as the ports, ships, and containers, and using the proposed model, the problem was implemented in MATLAB and the results showed that the fleet efficiency increased.
