Abstract

Oxidation and electrical conductivity of stainless steels used as interconnects in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells can be improved by using a conductive and a protective Coating layer. In this study, Austenitic Stainless Steel AISI 304 was coated in a cobalt powder base mixture by pack cementation method. Isothermal Oxidation test was used to evaluate the Oxidation resistance of coated and uncoated samples. Also, Area specific resistance (ASR) was measured as a function of isothermal Oxidation time at 800 ° C. Microstructure of the Coating layer and the oxi-dized samples were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the samples coated with cobalt showed better Oxidation resistance than the uncoated ones. The results also showed that increasing the Oxidation time increased the ASR. Cobalt Coating layer was also converted into CoFe2O4, Co3O4 and CoCr2O4 spinels during the isothermal Oxidation process. Cobalt spinels exhibited lower ASR (27. 24 cmO) compared to the uncoated sample (60. 25 cmO).
