Abstract

 Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and Beet mosaic virus (BtMV) cause mosaic symptoms, blistering, leaf malformation, reduction of root and foliage weight and reduction of seed yields in SUGAR BEET. In Iran, these viruses have been detected in single and dual infections in SUGAR BEET fields on different areas. In the present work interactions between CMV and BtMV, vis-a-vis symptom expression and relative virus concentration in SUGAR BEET were studied. To study relative competitiveness of CMV and BtMV in mixed infections, a completely randomized design with 4 replications and eleven treatments was used under greenhouse conditions. This experiment included inoculation of SUGAR BEET plants with a mixture of CMV and BtMV containing different relative concentrations of the two viruses, and consecutive inoculation of plants with two viruses at 1-2 day intervals. Twenty three days after inoculation, the samples were collected and analyzed by ELISA, using respective antisera prepared in this study. Optical density (OD) values recorded by microplate reader at 410 nm were used as a measure of relative viral concentration. The data were subsequently analyzed by F test and compared with Duncan'S test. The results showed an increase in the concentration of CMV in most doubly infected plants when compared with plants infected singly with CMV, while BtMV showed no significant, change in concentration as a result of mixed infection. These results indicate a unilateral synergism between the two viruses.
