Title

ANTAGONISTIC EFFECTS OF TRICHODERMA SPECIES ON PHYTOPHTHORA CAPSICI, THE CAUSAL AGENT OF PEPPER ROOT AND CROWN ROT

Pages

  345-362

Abstract

Antagonist effects of 24 isolates of Trichoderma were used on Phytophthora capsid. Twelve of the isolates were recovered from Karaj and Varamin and the rest supplied by several sources. Five isolates were shown to be effective on P. capsid using dual culture technique. Macroscopic examination of TRICHODERMA SPECIES challenged with P. capsid revealed that all isolates inhibited advancing, establishing, sporulating and growth of the pathogenic fungus. Regarding the speed of colonization, T.viride (T.v3 and T.vI2) and T.virens (T.vS) colonized P. capsid faster than two other isolates. T. koningii (T.k19) rated second and T. harzianum (T.h2) was the least colonizer. Microscopic studies of TRICHODERMA SPECIES on the fungus showed that antagonistic hyphae made hyphal contact then grew parallel to the hyphae of pathogenic fungus and finally lysed them. Volatile metabolites emitted from all isolates inhibited growth of P.capsici and inhibitory effects of T.vS was more compared with the other isolates and inhibited the pathogen 100 percent. 25 percent concentration of non-volatile metabolites of T.viride (T.v3), T.h2, TvS, Tv12 and T.k19 inhibited the pathogen 100, 83.3, 72, 65, 4 and 60.7 percent, respectively. In greenhouse condition, applying colonized bran inocula of T.virens (T.vS), T.viride (T.vI2), T.harzianum (T.h2), T.Koningii (T.kI9) and T.viride (T.v3) caused 40, 30, 30, 20 and 15 percent reduction in PEPPER mortality, respectively.
