Abstract

During growing seasons of 2001-2002 this study was conducted to isolate and characterize RHIZOCTONIA associated with ROOT AND CROWN of Vicia faba L. in Khuzestan province. Infected plants were collected from different fields in different cities including Ahwaz, Mollasani, Soosangerd, Hamidie, Sefiabad, Dezful, Shoush, Shoushtar and Behbahan. Infected parts of the plants were surface sterilized, then small pieces of contaminated parts were plated on PDA. Twenty two isolates of multinucleate and one isolate of binucleate RHIZOCTONIA were isolated from plant tissues and their neighbouring soil respectively. The multinucleate RHIZOCTONIA isolates belonged to AG-4(15 isolates), AG-7(six isolates) and AG-I IB (one isolate) ANASTOMOSIS GROUPs and the binucleate isolate belonged to AG-G. Pathogenicity tests indicated that all isolates were pathogenic to broad bean. AG-4 isolates caused seedling death faster than the other isolates. This appears to be the first report of the isolation and pathogenicity of these ANASTOMOSIS GROUPs on broad bean. AG-7 is reported as a new ANASTOMOSIS GROUP for Iran.
