Abstract

In this paper, it is shown for the first time that an induction motor that has a turn fault can be driven at new operating points, by turning off the defected phase. The new permissible domain of operating points (PDOP) is a function of fault size, speed and torque, at which no fault enlargement would occur. The quality behaviors of the motor, the current of the short turns, the motor startup, and the scheme for determining PDOP are discussed. Although by turning off a phase, the maximum attainable torque is reduced sharply, but it is shown that driving the faulty motor in this way and in the PDOP, could tolerate higher speeds and higher fault sizes for the same load, in comparison to all phase drives. Experimental results presented support the validity of the achievements. The new PDOP are acceptable for many applications in which sustain of motor operation, even at a non rated point, is preferred to stopping the motor operation.
