Title

A THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE MOULD FILLING TIME IN RESIN TRANSFER MOULDING PROCESS

Abstract

 One of the most important parameters affecting the cost of a moulding process is reducing the MOULDING CYCLE of a manufacturing process. RESIN TRANSFER MOULDING (RTM) is a flexible manufacturing process used for fabrication of a wide range of COMPOSITE products. In this context, mould filling time is an important issue affecting the MOULDING CYCLE in RTM. In this paper, different parameters that can affect mould filling time in RTM process have been reported experimentally and theoretically. The effects of resin injection pressure, fiber volume fraction and resin viscosity on mould filling time have been studied for glass fiber polyester COMPOSITE systems. Moreover, the effects of these parameters have been studied by simulation of the mould filling by using LCMFlot software. Results show that there is a good agreement between experimental and simulation results. They also emphasize that it is cost effective to conduct numerical simulation in order to study the effect of these variables and also injection port and vent locations before manufacturing of a mould.
