Title

INVESTIGATION OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE- RICE STRAW COMPOSITE

Pages

  143-154

Abstract

In this study, COMPOSITEs were prepared from HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE - RICE STRAW at different levels (15, 30, 40 % by wt.) and MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (tensile, flexural and impact) were measured. The effect of maleic anhydride as a COUPLING AGENT and effectiveness of RICE STRAW flour particles with different sizes (12-25 and 25-40 mesh) on MECHANICAL PROPERTIES of COMPOSITEs were investigated. In total, 9 treatments were conducted as 3 treatments of HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE with 15, 30, 40 % by wt. fine RICE STRAW flour with 2% malice anhydride, 3 treatments of HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE with 15, 30, 40 % by wt. coarse RICE STRAW flour particles with 2% malice anhydride, 2 treatments of HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE with 30% wt. fine and coarse RICE STRAW flour particle and one pure HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE as control treatment. The results were analyzed using a factorial experiment in randomized complete block. Increasing straw resulted in decreasing impact strength. The COMPOSITEs containing fine particles showed higher impact and flexural modulus, compared to those made of coarse particles. The result show that COMPOSITE containing 30 % fine RICE STRAW flour particles have better MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (tensile and flexural strength) than other COMPOSITEs. The comparison between 30% of fine and coarse RICE STRAW flour particles with and without maleic anhydride using t-student test showed that increasing of maleic anhydride had good effect on the MECHANICAL PROPERTIES of RICE STRAW COMPOSITE.
