Abstract

Abū Ismail Abdullā h ibn Muhammad ibn Alī ; Ansā rī ; Heravi (396-481 AH/ 1006– 1088), known as Shaikh al-Islā m or rit;color:#ff0078">Khwaja Abdullā; rit;color:#ff0078">h Ansā; rī ; , is one of the most eminent Ḥ anbalī ; scholars of Khorasan, who is widely known among Persian speakers as Sufi and ascetic. He was a preacher, narrator (muḥ addith), Qur’; ā n commentator, and scholar in history and genealogy. He made many efforts to promote the Ḥ anbalī ; religion in Khorasan, particularly in his hometown, Herat. Several works in Arabic and Persian are attributed to him, some of which are properly of doubtful authenticity. One of the most significant works attributed to him is his commentary on the Qur’; an. Meybudī ; states at the beginning of his Kashf al-asrā; r that he considered the aforementioned commentary concise; hence, he expanded and elaborated it in a new format. However, the original text of the commentary of rit;color:#ff0078">Khwaja Abdullā; rit;color:#ff0078">h Ansā; rī ; , which was the basis of Meybudī ; ’ s work, has remained unrevealed. This paper introduces the newly discovered manuscripts of this Persian-Arabic commentary in the two libraries of Khalil Hamid Pasha (in Sparta, Turkey) and Imam Ali Shrine (in Najaf, Iraq). Moreover, it confirms their attribution to rit;color:#ff0078">Khwaja Abdullā; rit;color:#ff0078">h Ansā; rī ; , introduces the characteristics of the interpretive method of rit;color:#ff0078">Khwaja Abdullā; h, and deals with some of its prominent linguistic aspects such as Heravi Persian dialect, ancient Persian vocabulary, and Heravi syntax.
