Title

THE ROLE OF METABOTROPIC GLUTAMATE RECEPTORS (MGLUR II) IN CENTRAL REGULATION OF FOOD INTAKE IN BROILER COC KERELS

Pages

  23-30

Abstract

To determine whether Group II METABOTROPIC GLUTAMATE RECEPTORS and its agonist (APDC) and antagonist (LY341495) might participate in the stimulation of neural eating, 36 BROILER COCKERELs on the day of hatch were reared upto 700-750 grams. Each bird was anaesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and a 23-gauge thin-walled stainless steel guide cannula was stereotaxically implanted into the right lateral ventricle. Then, they were allowed about 5-7 days recovery before beginning the injections. In each experiment, 12 BROILER COCKERELs were used in a Replicated Latin Square design, with birds and days as blocking factors. The birds were injected with APDC (50mM) and LY341495 (300nM) separately. Their FOOD INTAKE was monitored by the computer at 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180 and 240 minutes post injections. The intracerebroventricular injection of APDC decreased cumulative FOOD INTAKE (P<0.05), while LY341495 significantly increased (P<0.05) cumulative FOOD INTAKE. Results of this study indicate that probabely METABOTROPIC GLUTAMATE RECEPTORS participate in cel1tral regulation of appetite in birds.
