Abstract:

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a systemic disease caused by loss of Bone Mass Density (BMD) and consequent fractures of disease increase the pain and decrease the individual’s quality of life. The present study was conducted to compare the quality of life in osteoporotic postmenopausal women with their normal counterparts.Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 275 postmenopausal females referred to the Namazi hospital in Shiraz. BMD was measured based on WHO standards and subjects with BMD<-2.5 Standard Deviation (SD) of the average value, were defined as having osteoporosis (cases), while those with BMD>1 SD, were considered normal (controls). The Qualeffo-41 questionnaire was used to estimate the quality of life and was reported on a scale of 100. Data were analyzed by SPSS software using the t-test and descriptive statistics. Results: The mean of the quality of life score was 25.5±11.7 and based on the WHO definition, 70.2% of participants were affected by osteoporosis. Estimates for good quality of life in osteoporosis subjects and normal postmenopausal females were 22.3% and 30.5%, respectively. Comparing the different aspects of quality of life in the cases and normal postmenopausal females, showed a statistical difference between the two groups in the “social activities” aspect. Conclusion: Regarding the gradual and asymptomatic trend of osteoporosis, it is essential to pay more attention to the preventive aspect of the disease to curtail effects of its outcomes on the quality of life.

Introduction: Osteoporosis is caused by a loss in the bone mass and the subsequent complications decrease quality of life (QOL) of the patients. This study is performed aiming to determine the effects of osteoporosis and thoracic kyphosis on the parameters of QOL in postmenopausal women. Materials and Methods: This was a case-control study in which 53 postmenopausal women participated according to the T-score and thoracic kyphosis and were divided into four groups. Then, QOL and also different fields were compared among the groups using the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF-36). The data analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results: According to the results, the impact of osteoporosis on total scores of QOL was not significant (P = 0. 783). In the areas of QOL, there was a significant difference only in the area of pain (P = 0. 030). However, there was a significant difference regarding the effect of postural kyphosis on the total score of QOL (P = 0. 021). In addition, in the fields of mental health problems, energy, mental feelings, and general health status, the differences were significant (P < 0. 050). Conclusion: Comparing the two factors affecting QOL in postmenopausal women (osteoporosis and postural kyphosis), it was revealed that the increased thoracic kyphosis had a more remarkable role in lowering the total score of QOL. Therefore, it is necessary to correct this situation in postmenopausal women.

Background and Aim: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease with its associated fractures 8 times higher in women than men. Doing physical activity to maintain bone mass and strength are vital and help individuals in prevention of osteoporosis-related fractures. Although some studies have shown a positive relationship between physical activity and bone mineral density (BMD), some revealed physical activities are ineffective on BMD. Thus a systematic study to clarify the contradictions and determine the effect of physical activity on bone mineral density is required. The purpose of this study was to review the effects of physical activity on bone mineral density, pain and quality of life in patients with osteoporosis.Materials and Methods: In this review, articles that were published in international and Iranian journals of Pub med, Springer, Elsevier, Science Direct, Magiran, Noor mags, SID with standard keywords were used. Results: Most of the findings from various studies, indicated positive effects of physical activity on bone mineral density, reduced pain and improved quality of life for people with osteoporosis. Conclusion: although compounded exercises and researches that have been done on young people suggested a positive effect on bone mineral density, in the researches on which the exercise period was similar, a positive effect did not show in elderly. Sports activities for people with osteoporosis should be selected according to the characteristics such as age, purpose (treatment or prevention) and limits of patient. Since there is a significant positive effect of exercise on bone mineral density, It is recommended to study the exercise effects in various environments (land, water, and mixed).

Abstract:

Objective Osteoporosis is a widespread skeletal condition due to decreased muscle strength and bone density. The most common complications are fractures followed by pain and reduced quality of life (QoL). Therefore, this research aimed to examine the effect of exercise therapy on muscle strength, QoL, and bone mass in osteoporotic women. Materials & Methods Available literature was reviewed using ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane. Studies were considered eligible if they were randomized controlled trials (RCT) conducted on postmenopausal osteoporotic women, used exercise therapy as an intervention, and investigated muscle strength, QoL, and bone mass as outcomes. Two authors independently assessed the quality of the articles using the physiotherapy evidence database (PEDro) scale. The Cohen’s d effect size was computed by dividing the mean standardized difference by the standard deviation to measure the treatment effect, which includes exercise therapy. Results Seven papers were chosen to be included in this research. Their PEDro scores varied between 6 and 9 out of a possible 10. The effect size mean differences, resulting from exercise therapy, ranged from 0. 32 to 0. 63, indicating “small” to “moderate” effects in enhancing the condition of osteoporotic postmenopausal women. It was reported that there was a small effect size in 5 studies and a medium effect size in 2 studies. The research findings suggested the effect of balance, strengthening, stretching, stability, and motor control exercises on bone mass and muscle strength in osteoporotic postmenopausal women. Conclusion Findings indicate that exercise therapy interventions positively affect muscular strength, QoL, and bone mass in osteoporotic postmenopausal women. Additional well-conducted research is required to support this assumption further.
