Abstract:

Background: The main goal of physical therapy is to help the patient gain a better health status. Several studies have investigated the use of reminders to prevent such failures on the patients’ side. This article presents a systematic review of the literature concerning reminders in physical therapy. Methods: Databases were searched until May 2017 and literatures were found from April 1992 until 2017. The literature recruitment strategy was based on applying several keywords and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) combination running against title and abstract, including concepts such as reminder, physical therapy. The finally selected articles were categorized through reminder aspects such as how, who feedback. Data were extracted according to PRISMA guidelines. Results: In 47% of studies, the reminder was sent to the patients, 29% to the physical therapists and 12% to the caretaker team. In 24% of the studies, paper-based letters were main medium for reminders while the rest were various types of media like emails and SMS mobile text messages. 35% of the articles showed positive effects of the reminders. Conclusions: Many reminder methods consisted of SMS, phone calls, letters, emails and notices on the wall were used in physical therapy. Reminders may be used to improve patients' adherence to exercise programs.

Abstract:

2With the advancement of technology, the use of pill reminders has become highly beneficial, particularly for patients with chronic diseases who require daily medication uptake. Considering the widespread use of smartphones, the pill reminder apps can be a suitable tool for daily and even periodic reminding of patients about the uptake of their pills. The elderly people have been reported to forget to take their medications more than other age groups, making them the primary target for such apps. The factors such as loneliness and negligence of caregivers have a significant negative effect on medication management in the elderly [1].

Abstract:

Bakhtishu’ Dynasty is among the greatest of Jundishapur dynasties known for their knowledge-seeking. Six generations of this dynasty taught and offered services in medical treatment. Their expertise made Abbasid caliphs employ them for their own medical treatment, as well as translation and writing on sciences especially medicine. They had an impact on medicine in Islamic civilization. It is theoretical with a descriptive analytical approach.Research shows that Bakhtishu’ Dynasti proved efficient as physicians for the Abbasid caliphs. The latter group wrote and translated valuable books.Their academic and practical activities in different branches of medicine, over several centuries, made them the academic inheritors of Jondi Shapour University, connecting ancient medicine to Islamic medicine.

Abstract:

Introduction: Following the drug use pattern is among the important factors in treating hypertension. Elderly people often have low adherence to blood pressure medication. Forgetfulness seems to be one of the most important reasons for non-adherence to medication and ultimately for lack of control of blood pressure in the elderly. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of sending drug use reminder SMS on controlling the blood pressure in elderlies. Materials and Methods: The present randomized-clinical trial study was conducted on 100 elderlies suffering from hypertension who referred to blood pressure clinics in Kerman city (Iran) in 2017. Blood pressure of the subjects was measured before the intervention. In the first, second, and third months, a drug use reminder SMS was sent to intervention group twice a day, twice a week, and once a month, respectively. In the control group, no SMS was sent. Before the intervention, and after the first, second, and third months of intervention, the blood pressure of subjects was controlled and recorded. Results: The mean age of subjects was 64. 72 years old and the mean age of morbidity was 6. 46 years. Before the intervention, no significant difference was observed between two groups in terms of blood pressure. Relatively, one month after the intervention, a significant difference between the two groups was observed in terms of diastolic blood pressure (P=0. 0001). In the second and third months after the intervention, there was a significant difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure (P=0. 0001). Conclusion: Sending drug use reminder SMS to elderlies can control the systole and diastolic blood pressure.

Abstract:

Introduction: Tracheal agenesis (TA) is a rare congenital anomaly presenting at birth with respiratory distress and difficult airway management. Polyhydramnios and premature labor are often pathologies associated with these pregnancies, which makes patient management more difficult. TA is often associated with other organ system anomalies (such as cardiovascular, renal and limb anomalies). Hereby, we report a case of tracheal agenesis who is presenting to our pediatric surgery and anesthesiology clinics. Case Presentation: An 30 weeks’ premature infant was transferred to our neonatal intensive care unit, with the diagnosis of tracheal agenesis. He had failed attempts at intubations because of failing to visualize the vocal cords. It was learned that immediately, his respiratory tract was secured via cervical oesophagostomy using long tracheostomy cannula and the infant was subsequently stabilized by gently ventilated. The diagnosis was confirmed on CT scan. It was performed distal oesophageal banding at the upper gastroesophageal junction with gastrostomy. On postoperative day 12 in intensive care unit, the baby further got complicated with a developing cyanosis and circulatory insufficiency. Cardiorespiratory arrest was developed and the infant died after 40 minutes after resuscitation. Conclusions: Successful approach at tracheal agenesis depends on, either prenatal diagnosis or recognition of this situation immediately after birth. In recent years, long time survival has been reported in tracheal agenesis through various surgical approaches. Therefore, it should be remembered that early esophageal ventilation is a life-saving alternative.

Abstract:

Objectives: Since forgetfulness is the major cause of missed appointments, reminder systems can be used prior to appointments. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different reminders [e-mails, social networks, telephone, and short message service (SMS)] in order to reduce missed appointments by orthodontic patients. Methods: Of a total of 751 active orthodontic patients, 379 were assigned to the reminder group and 372 to the control group. The former group was randomly divided into four subgroups who received a reminder 2 days before their appointments either by telephone, e-mail, SMS, or a message on Facebook. Patients allocated to the control group received no reminder. The percentage of missed appointments and the demographic characteristics of patients in each group were analyzed with the chi-squared test. Results: The percentage of missed appointments was significantly higher in the control group (41. 39%) than the reminder group (11. 08%) (P<0. 001). There was no difference in the attendance rate of patients among telephone, SMS, and e-mail groups. Missed appointments were insignificantly higher in patients whose parents had the highest educational level (P=0. 8). In patients with low family income, the percentage of missed appointments was the lowest, but this difference was not statistically significant (P=0. 5). Conclusion: The study results indicated that sending reminders is an effective strategy to reduce missed appointments. E-mails and social networks can be employed to send reminders easily and cost-effectively and prevent missed appointments.

Abstract:

Background: Non-adherence to treatment in patients with beta-thalassemia major (BTM) presents a significant challenge in effective disease management. This study aimed to assess the effect of a therapy reminder application (app) on treatment adherence in adult patients with BTM in Mashhad in 2024.Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in 2024 at a thalassemia clinic affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (Mashhad, Iran). Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups, using permuted block randomization, with concealed allocation. The intervention group used the ThalaMe therapy reminder app for 8 weeks (February-July 2024), while the control group received standard care. Medication adherence was measured using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) and the Chronic Disease Treatment Adherence Questionnaire (CDTAQ) before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software, using paired t tests or Wilcoxon signed-rank tests for within-group comparisons and independent t tests or Mann-Whitney U tests for between-group comparisons. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study included 76 adult patients with BTM, equally distributed between the intervention and control groups (n=38 each). Baseline measurements showed no significant differences between groups in either MMAS-8 scores (P=0.75) or CDTAQ scores (P=0.11). The MMAS-8 was inversely scored, with lower scores indicating higher adherence. Following the 8-week intervention period, the group using the ThalaMe app demonstrated significantly better adherence outcomes (1.05±0.78) than the controls (2.92±1.4, P<0.001). The intervention group had significantly higher CDTAQ scores (185.5±8.07) than the control group (151.79±27.08, P<0.001).Conclusion: The therapy reminder app significantly enhanced medication adherence and treatment management in patients with BTM, while simultaneously enhancing patient and family engagement through counseling.Trial registration number: IRCT20240222061079N1
