Abstract:

Parkinson disease is one of the neurodegenerative diseases, with a prevalence of about 1% in people older than 65. From a pathological point of view, degeneration of neuromelanin cells in pars compacta of substantia nigra has been established. The reason of degeneration is unknown. Increase in iron concentration in substantia nigra of Parkinson's patients has been established. The increase of iron in this part of brain is due to the altered systemic iron metabolism in these patients. In this study the serum levels of iron and TIBC in 34 patients and 102 matched healthy persons were measured. Normality of Hb, Hct, MCV and MCH were considered as inclusion criterion in both groups. Two sample t-test indicated that iron serum level and TIBC in Parkinson patients were significantly lower than the controls (P<0.0001). Hct and Hb levels were lower whereas MCV and MCH levels were higher in patients group; A significant difference was observed between the two groilpsfor iron serum level and TIBC. There was no relationship between age, sex, the disease duration and its severity with iron serum level and TIBC. Due to iron sedimentation in substantia nigra in patients, this study may prove the role of iron in the pathogenesis or the defect in systematic iron metabolism, in this disease.

Introduction: Alopecia areata is a common disease that affects the life quality of patients. Iron deficiency has been suggested to play a role, but its effect is controversial. We decided to evaluate the relationship between alopecia areata and serum ferritin, TIBC and serum iron levels.Materials and Methods: In this study, 30 patients who were diagnosed with alopecia areata by a dermatologist and 30 healthy individual as the control group were evaluated. All the cases (patients and control group) were referred to Semnan Central Lab for the following laboratory tests: CBC test (WBC, HGB, PLT, MCV, MCH, MCHC), serum ferritin, serum iron and serum TIBC.Results: Mean serum ferritin (P<0.001), serum iron (P<0.001), transferin saturation (P<0.001) and mean hemoglobin (P=0.002) were significantly lower in patient group comparing to the control group. Mean TIBC (P<0.001) was significantly higher in patient group in compared with the control group (P<0.001).Conclusion: Our findings indicate that there is a relationship between alopecia areata and low serum ferritin, low serum iron and increased TIBC. Therefore evaluation of serum iron status and treatment, if needed, with iron supplements is recommended in alopecia areata patients.

Abstract:

As might be expected, iron deficiency leads to anemia, and, it is found around the world. Due to its need during the pregnancy, WHO paid attention to "childbearing "health" in 1998? Absorbance of iron depends on gastric secretion and HCL for efficient absorption. In present research three groups of rats, which contain 15 ones, with the same diet, sex, age and condition were selected. Diet of group A and B contained 5g/kg and 109/kg sodium bicarbonate respectively and the diet of group C as a control group was free of sodium bicarbonate. After 3 months, we used ether as the anesthesia and removed blood directly from the heart, serum was separated and Iron, TIBC measured. Also PH of gastric secretions was estimated, the mean of PH in group C (3), group A (3.8) and group B (3.8) was observed. Finally we found out that the levels of Iron and TIBC in group C were 72.5 µg/dl and 353 µg/dl, in group A 69.1 µg/dl and 480.2 µg/dl and in group B 52.8 and 309.9 µg/dl respectively. On the basis of our results, we suggest that the using of sodium bicarbonate along diet effects on the absorption of Iron - which is due to the changes of gastric acidity comparing to control group.

Abstract:

Background: oxidative stress is one of important risk factors of deiseases specially in military recruits who are under sever practices Vitamin C is one of the major antioxidant factors which also help to increase iron absorption. Vitamin C and probably iron deficiency due to that, can decrease soldier forces and cause various diseases particularly pulmonary diseases. The purpose of this study is to determine serum level of vitamin C and iron and TIBC in military recruits to prevent following problems due to deficiency of Vitamin C.Materials and Methods: This study was done as a cross-sectional study in September 2007 in Tehran and 51 soldiers were chosen randomly who were between 17 and 24 years old. 5cc bloods were collected for determining serum vitamin C, iron and TIBC. Prevalence of vitamin C and iron deficiency and relationship between vitamin C and iron serum levels and between vitamin C and iron serum levels and between vitamin C and TIBC serum levels were calculated. Results: Mean value of serum level of vitamin C 0.57±0.23 SD was less than normal range. (0.6-2 mg/dl), and prevalence of vitamin C deficiency among the soldiers of this study was 56.8%. However, mean value of serum iron 102.57±53.78 mg/dl SD was in normal range (60-180 mg0dl) and also TIBC amounts 364.51±59.00 mg/dl SD was in normal range (230-410 mg/dl). Relationship between vitamin C and TIBC serum levels was reversely significant (P<0.001).Conclusions: It is advisable to get more attention to provide more vitamin C resources for young soldiers for preventing to iron deficiency status or other potent dangers.

Abstract:

The main goal of this research was to determine effects of a submaxiamal aerobic exercise on rate of changes of ferritin, iron and TIBC blood plasma in young patients with Talassemia Major. Standard Balke test was used on a treadmill that consisted of 25 stages and in order to be aware of risks involved during exercise, electrocardiogram leads were placed on subjects. Blood samples were collected and analyzed in three stages, before, immediately after and 36 hours after test. Ten patients with Thalassemia Major were selected randomly and tested. Data were analyzed using statistical methods such as paired T- Test and Multi-regression. The results indicate: 1) the amount of ferritin decreased significantly during exercise compared with rest stage. 2) The amount of ferritin in recovery period increased compared with exercise stage. 3) Iron and TIBC were not changed in either exercise or rest stage. 4) There was a positive correlation between ferritin, iron and TIBC recovery (r=0.74). 5) Ferritin decreased below 65% HRR, but increased above this level.

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional disorders in the world, and it may affect the metabolism and function of a number of proteins, including the level of thyroid hormones. As such, fluctuations in the level of thyroid hormones may also affect the body's iron status. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between thyroid hormones and the status of iron stores. Materials and Methods: The study populations included referral patients to laboratory of Shourideh clinic in Mashhad, Iran. Fe, Ferritin, TIBC (total iron-binding capacity), TSH, T4, T3, and CRP tests were performed with a physician's request. The target sample size was a total of 420 patients including 287 women and 133 men with an average age of 41. 5 years. TSH and Ferritin test were measured by ELISA method, Fe and TIBC were measured by automated method. Results: The results showed no significant relationship between the body's iron status and thyroid hormones level (P˃ 0. 05). Interestingly, in subjects with lower iron level, TSH was at the highest level and T4 was at the lowest level. However, no positive relationship was found between iron status and T3 level. Conclusion: Although, there was no significant relationship between iron status and thyroid hormones level in the present study, it seems that the fluctuations of each of them may affect somehow the other.
