AEROBIC EXERCISE IN AMBIENT PARTICULATE MATTER MODIFIES THE INFLAMMATION RISK FACTORS FOR HEART TISSUE AND OBESITY IN MALE WISTAR RAT

Abstract

 INTRODUCTION: EPIDEMIOLOGIC STUDIES HAVE LINKED EXPOSURE TO FINE PARTICULATE MATTER IN THE FORM OF AIR POLLUTION TO DEATHS CAUSED BY A BROAD NUMBER OF HEALTH CONDITIONS. ON THE OTHER HAND THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF AEROBIC EXERCISE ON CARDIOVASCULAR PERFORMANCE ARE NO SECRET. THERE IS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AIR POLLUTION AND WEIGHT GAIN AND ALSO THE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECTS OF EXERCISE VIA WEIGHT LOSS. HOWEVER, THE EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM AEROBIC EXERCISE ON THE HEART RESPONSE TO PM10 HAVE NOT BEEN INVESTIGATED. THEREFORE, THE PRESENT STUDY EVALUATED THE EFFECT OF AEROBIC EXERCISE ON THE OBESITY AND HEART INFLAMMATORY STATUS OF RATS EXPOSED TO PM10 CARBON BLACK.METHOD: TWENTY FOUR ADULT MALE WISTAR RATS (AGE: 10 WEEKS & WEIGHT: 279.29±26.97 G) WERE DIVIDED TO 4 GROUPS; A: CONTROL (WITHOUT EXPOSURE PM10 AND AEROBIC EXERCISE; N=6), B: AEROBIC EXERCISE (FIVE TIMES PER WEEK FOR 4 WEEK; N=6), C: EXPOSURE TO PM10 CARBON BLACK (5 MG/M3; PER RAT; N=6), D: AND AEROBIC EXERCISE CONCOMITANTLY WITH EXPOSURE TO PM10 CARBON BLACK (N=6). THE GENE EXPRESSION OF TLR4, NF-KB AND IL-1B WERE ANALYZED IN HEART TISSUE BY REAL-TIME PCR. BODY MASS CHANGE WAS EVALUATED BEFORE AND AFTER THE INTERVENTION. IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GROUPS, TWO WAY ANOVA AND LSD POST HOC WERE USED.RESULTS: IT WAS FOUND THAT AEROBIC EXERCISE INHIBITED THE PM10 -INDUCED INCREASE IN THE GENE EXPRESSION OF IL-1 B. BUT COMPARED WITH CONTROL GROUP, GENE EXPRESSION OF IL-1 B SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED ONLY IN C GROUP (P=0.046). IN RELATION TO BODY MASS, ALTHOUGH THE GREATEST INCREASE WAS SEEN IN GROUP C AND GROUP B DECREASED, BUT THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GROUPS. HOWEVER IN THIS AREA INTERACTION OF PRACTICE AND CONTAMINATION WAS SIGNIFICANT (P=0.021).CONCLUSION: WE CONCLUDE THAT FOUR WEEKS OF EXPOSURE TO PM10 CARBON BLACK SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES IL-1B IN HEART TISSUE AND THIS SITUATION DID NOT WORSEN BY AEROBIC EXERCISE. EXERCISE INCREASES ENERGY EXPENDITURE AND METABOLISM OF BODY FAT WHICH CAN REDUCE THE RISK OF DEVELOPING OBESITY AND ALSO PROMOTE CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH AND BLOOD LIPID PROFILE. CONSIDERING THE REDUCTION OF INFLAMMATORY FACTORS IN GROUP D COMPARED TO GROUP C, IT SEEMS THAT THE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT OF AEROBIC EXERCISE IN AIR POLLUTION ARE ALSO INDUCED TO PM10 AND ALONG WITH HELPING WEIGHT LOSS IT REDUCES CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS.
