Based on the biological condition, all countries have certain capacity of water resources, that can be calculated by ecological capacity. Consuming water more than the available capacity leads to devastating effect on environment. In this paper we have studied the effects of intermediate consumption of water by economic sectors on the water footprint in Iran economy. For this purpose, we have employed Social Accounting Matrix (SAM), version 2011. The results show that total water footprint of domestic and imported economic sectors was97.7 billion cubic meters of which 88 percent is of domestic water and 12 percent is from imported water. Furthermore, production in the sectors of wheat, cows and buffaloes, sheep, goats and other live animals except poultry, other crops, food production had the most domestic and imported water footprint with 66 percent of total economic sectors water footprint. However, subsectors of services ranked last.
