Abstract:

Water scarcity causes production losses in arid and semi-arid regions. In this condition, deficit irrigation is one of the most important methods to minimize effects of water shortage. This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of two kinds of irrigation management (deficit irrigation and partial rootzone drying technique) on some of physiological and phenological characteristics and water use efficiency of tomato. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of DI75 and DI50 (supplying 75% and 50% water requirement) applied to the whole root system, PRD75 and PRD50 (supplying 75% and 50% water requirement) which was applied to one side of the root system, and alternated in every irrigation, and FI treatment, which supplied 100% water requirement, and was considered as control. The results showed that the highest water use efficiency was observed in PRD75 (6.28 kg/m3) and the lowest in DI50 (1.98 kg/m3). Water use efficiency was reduced 67% in DI50 and increased 4.6% in PRD75, as compared with full irrigation. Furthermore, plant water state showed that relative water content was higher in PRD treatments than DI treatments. The analysis of variance indicated that there was a significant difference in leaf diameter stomata among treatments at 5% level .The higher level of water increased stomata diameter. The opening of stomata in FI and DI treatments was higher than PRD treatments. FI had the highest numbers of stomata per unit of leaf area and PRD50 had the lowest (10509.04 and 6904.4, respectively). There was no difference among treatments in phenological characteristics in terms of growing degree-day to fruit yield and growing-degree day to harvesting.

Abstract:

In this study, the Penman-Monteith methods proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO-56) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) were used for hourly ETo estimation under the semiarid climate of Kerman, Iran. Hourly ETo estimations obtained from the proposed methods were compared with measured ETo values by using a large weighing electronic lysimeter during April to September 2005 (totally 3352 hourly ETo data cases). Simple linear regression and statistical factors such as root mean square error and index of agreement were used for estimated and observed value comparison. The average of measured and estimated hourly ETo values using these methods for integrated data were 0.28 and 0.23 mm hr-1, respectively, which means that average estimated ETo values were approximately 21 percent less than the measured ETo values. This analysis was also performed for hourly data of each month during the study period. The results showed that FAO-56 Penman-Monteith underestimated ETo values by 18.4, 19.3, 26.3, 20.4, 21.4 and 22.1 percent for April to September, respectively, when compared with the measured values. Similarly, the ASCE Penman-Monteith underestimated ETo values by 17, 19.6, 18.4, 18.2, 19.7 and 20.9 percent for the same period, respectively, when compared with the lysimetric data. Finally, a set of regression equation for transformation of the estimated hourly data into the measured hourly ETo values has been presented for each month.

Abstract:

In mountainous basins, snow water equivalent is usually used to evaluate water resources related to snow. In this research, based on the observed data, the snow depth and its water equivalent was studied through application of non-linear regression, artificial neural network as well as optimization of network's parameters with genetic algorithm. To this end, the estimated values by artificial neural network, neural network-genetic algorithm combined method and regression method were compared with the observed data. The field measurement were carried out in the Samsami basin in February 2006. Correlation coefficient (r) mean square error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to evaluate efficiency of the various models of artificial neural networks and nonlinear regression models. The results showed that artificial neural network and genetic algorithm combined methods were suitable to estimate snow water equivalent. In general, among the methods used, neural network-genetic algorithm combined method presented the best result (r=0.84, MSE=0.041 and MAE=0.051). Of the parameters considered, elevation from sea level is the most important and effective to estimate snow water equivalent.

Abstract:

In order to study the effect of spur dike position in the bend on the process of scoring, some tests were done in a laboratory flume of Plax glass material with 180 deg bend and R/B=4/7. In this research, by setting an spur dike in the laboratory flume with positions of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150and 160 degrees, discharge rates of 20, 24 and 28 Lit/s, and fixed depth of 13 cm, the process of scoring around spur dike in pure water was investigated. For flume bed, gravels of uniformly granulated sizes were used. The results showed that the maximum scoring in the length of river bend is obtained with increasing the rate and angle of position up to the angle of 60 deg, and then from position of 60 deg the rate of scoring decreases up to the position of 120 deg, and finally the increase in the position up to 160 deg results in the maximum scoring.

Abstract:

Daily solar radiation intercepted at the earth’s surface is an input required for water resources, environmental and agricultural studies. However, the measurement of this parameter can only be done in a few places. This has led researchers to develop a number of methods for estimating solar radiation based on frequently available meteorological records such as hours of sunshine or air temperature. In this study two empirical Angestrom and Hargreaves-Samani models, which are respectively based on air temperature and sunshine duration were calibrated and evaluated for estimating solar radiation in southeast of Tehran, Iran. Also, two neural networks models were presented using similar inputs and above-mentioned empirical models. The results showed that the both empirical and neural network models provided closer agreement with the measured values, but the models based on sunshine hours gave better estimates than the models based on air temperature. The neural network model based on sunshine hours with a R2 of 0.97 and a RMSE of 1.34 MJ m-2 d-1 provided the best results.

Abstract:

Industrial, agricultural and urban activities have contaminated soil by heavy metals that can also increase concentration of the metals in food chains. This study was carried out in Isfahan province where lots of such activities are in progress. The purpose of this study was to determine spatial variability of Arsenic As in Isfahan soils. In this research, the soil samples (0-20 cm) were collected in a stratified random sampling system at about 4 Km intervals in a study area of 6800 Km2. The positions of samples were recorded using a GPS. After laboratory preparation, soil samples were measured for total As. Spatial structures of total As were determined by directional variograms. Spherical model was the best model to describe spatial variability of As. Mean-square error (MSE) and correlation coefficient were used to validate variograms. Distribution map for Arsenic was prepared using the obtained information from element by point kriging method and by using Surfer software. Interpolation in blocks by dimensions of 1000×1000 m was made. The mine effective factors with high concentration of As are parent material, and direction of dominant wind has affected the spread of As in north-west of the study area.

Abstract:

Although soil organic matter (SOM) constitutes a small portion of soil bulk weight, it has a tremendous effect on physico-chemical and biological properties of soils. It is also one of the most important indicators of soil quality and its production. Soil organic matter determination is required for soil fertility management and soil pollution purposes. Wet oxidation procedure of Walkley-Black is a routine, relatively accurate and popular method for the determination of soil organic matter, but it involves the use of chromate and high cost of analysis. Therefore, loss-on-ignition (LOI) procedure as a simple and cheap method of SOM estimation which also avoids chromic acid waste has got more attention. The aims of this study were (i) to establish the relationships between LOI method and SOM as determined by Walkley-Black method for four major plains of Chaharmahal-va-Bakhtiari province and (ii) to determine the optimal temperature of the LOI. To do this, 205 soil surface samples were randomly collected from 0-25 cm depth of Shahrekord, Farsan, Kohrang and Lordegan plains to determine soil organic matter by Walkley-Black method and LOI procedure at 300, 360, 400, 500 and 550oC for two hours. To determine the optimum temperature for ignition, 40 soil samples were selected to compare the SOM and CCE before and after ignition for each temperature. Results showed a positive, linear significant relationship existed between LOI and wet oxidation in each plain. Coefficient of determination (R2) of the equations was higher for individual plain than the overall equation. Coefficient of determination and line slope decreased and error (RMSE) increased with increasing ignition temperature. At higher contents of calcium carbonate, the rate of line slope decrease with increasing ignition temperature was more noticeable. This may be due to the destruction of carbonates at higher temperature. A temperature of around 360oC was identified as optimum as it burned most organic carbon, destroyed less inorganic carbon, caused less clay structural water loss and used less electrical energy.

Abstract:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using treated industrial by-products as a zinc (Zn) source and compare their Zn availability and efficiency to ZnSO4. A greenhouse factorial experiment in a completely randomized block design was conducted with corn (Zea mays L.) in triplicates. Treatments included three Zn sources (ZnSO4, IUT-UT in size of <1 mm and IUT-UT in size of 2-3 mm) at three rates (0, 20 and 40 kg ha-1). The results showed that Zn application both in the form of ZnSO4 and treated industrial by-products significantly (P<0.05) increased the growth and shoot dry matter yield of corn. Shoot dry matter weight of corn in pots that had received IUTUT was higher compared to those that had received ZnSO4. The highest shoot dry matter weight was produced at the IUT-UT treatment in size of <1 mm. Increased fertilizer rate significantly (P<0.05) enhanced shoot and root Zn concentration. However, this increase was higher in ZnSO4 treatment as compared to the IUT-UT treatments. Application of the IUT-UT caused a significant increase in shoot Fe concentration of corn. Shoot and root Cd concentration in all experimental treatments was less than 0.02 mg kg-1. The results showed that IUT-UT can be used as a slow-release Zn fertilizer with low impurity.

Abstract:

This study was conducted to determine the effect of 3 extractants on K release from biotite, phlogopite and muscovite. The minerals were grouped to <60 and 60-100 mm size classes. Particles CEC were saturated with calcium. Sequential extraction up to 30 times was carried out using 0.01 M HCl, 1M NH4OAc and 0.05 M BaCl2 solutions and cumulative concentration of K was calculated for each extractant. There was a difference among the 3 extractants in cumulative K release values from the three minerals. The highest values of cumulative K release were obtained by 0.01 M HCl and 1M NH4OAc for less than 60 and 60-100 mm particle sizes, respectively. The amount of K release from muscovite was even higher when 1 M NH4OAc and 0.05 M BaCl2 solutions were used as extractants. This might indicate that muscovite cannot be considered as an ineffective source of available K in soils. Furthermore, particle size had a great impact on nonexchangeable K release from micaceous minerals. Coarser particles released higher quantity of K as compared to that of finer particles. Therefore, particle size distribution of different micaceous minerals in soils may be a factor that causes a difference in the amount of K release from soils.

Abstract:

Chlorine and sulfate toxicity in water and soils are the main factors limiting growth and yield of most plants. Tolerance and sensitive indexes related to Cl and SO4 in irrigation water and effect of nitrogen fertilizer on barley were evaluated in a completely randomized design with three replications, under greenhouse conditions. Quantity salinity tolerance and susceptibility indices such as Mean Productivity (MP), Tolerance Index (TOL), Geometric Mean Productivity (GMP), Stress Susceptibility Index (SSI), Reduction Yield Ratio (Yr) and Stress Tolerance Index (STI) on the basis of plant yield with stress (Ys) and without stress (Yp) conditions were determined. Results showed that STI had a positive and highest significant correlation with grain and straw yields, compared to other indexes. Study of Standard Beta contents in grain and straw with STI index showed that the impact of Cl had a greater effect on reduction of salinity tolerance than SO4. Also Cl/SO4 ratios of 1:3 and 1:2 for grain and 1:2 and 1:1 for plant straw brought about highest tolerance to salinity, compared to non-stress conditions. The scatter plot also confirmed such findings.

Abstract:

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Var. Speedfeed) is a major forage crop in Birjand Region, and phosphorus (P) plays an important role in its nutritional value. During a field campaign, eighty soil samples from the region were collected and analyzed. Among them, 24 samples varying in physico-chemical properties and available P were selected. Five extractants were used for measuring sorghum available P as follows: 1) 0.5 M NaHCO3, pH=8.5, shaken for 30 minutes (Olsen's method), 2) 0.5 M NaHCO3, pH=8.5, shaken for 16 hours (Colwel's method), 3) 0.0025 M Na2-EDTA, pH=7 (EDTA method), 4) 1 M NH4HCO3, 0.005 N DTPA (Soltanpour and Schwab's method), and 5) Water (Paauw's method). A greenhouse experiment using a completely randomized design was carried out with 24 soil samples, two treatments of 0 and 90 mg P/kg soil and three replicates. Results indicated that all five extractants are suitable for prediction of sorghum available phosphorus, but Olson and Paauw's methods are preferable. The results also show ed that the critical levels of soil phosphorus for sorghum by Olsen, Colwel, EDTA, Soltanpour and Schwab and Paauw methods are 17, 24, 14, 7 and 2.5 mg P/kg soil, respectively. Statistical analysis indicated that soil pH, clay percentage and organic carbon significantly affected sorghum available phosphorus.

Abstract:

This study was conducted to compare the impact of various organic amendments with different C/N ratios and chemical compositions on biological and chemical degradation of Atrazine in sterile and non-sterile soils. The experiment was carried out in a factorial arrangement (2×6×2) including two soil types (sterile and non sterile soils), six types of organic amendments (vermicompost, cow manure, glucose, starch and sawdust and without organic matter) and two levels of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer (0 and 250 mg kg-1), with three replications. Initial Atrazine concentration in soil samples (silty loam) was adjusted at 100 mg.kg-1. Soil samples were amended by organic materials at the rate of 5% by weight and treated with 250 mg inorganic nitrogen fertilizer( NH4NO3). Half of soil samples were sterilized by HgCl2. Residual Atrazine concentration in soil samples were determined by HPLC at the end of 20, 40 and 60 days incubation time. The results showed that all the applied organic amendments (except for cow manure) and inorganic nitrogen treatment reduced biological degradation of Atrazine in non- sterile soil samples. It was not possible to predict the biological degradation of Atrazine based on C/N ratio of organic amendments and microbial activity. The results also showed that chemical degradation of Atrazine after 60 days of incubation was not affected by organic amendment and inorganic nitrogen fertilizer.

Abstract:

In order to study the effect of deficit irrigation at reproductive growth stages on water use efficiency and drought tolerance of four sunflower cultivars, including Azargol, Allstar, Alison and Euroflor, an experiment was conducted during 2007 growing season at experimental field of Agricultural Faculty of Bu-Ali Sina University, Hamadan, Iran. The experiment was a split plot based on randomized complete block design with three replications. The irrigation levels included full irrigation, deficit irrigation at heading, deficit irrigation at flowering, deficit irrigation at seed filling, deficit irrigation at heading and seed filling and deficit irrigation at flowering and seed filling stages. The biological and economic yield (BY and EY), harvest index (HI), water used, water use efficiency (WUE) and water stress indexes were measured. The results indicated that the highest BY (11681.7 kg.ha-1), EY (4854.0 kg.ha-1) and HI (42%) were obtained from full irrigation treatment. The lowest negative effects in cultivars belonged to deficit irrigation at seed filling stage. Euroflor obtained the highest of these parameters with 10127.1 Kg.ha-1, 4081.5 Kg.ha-1 and 40% respectively. Highest WUE was related to twice cutoff of irrigation in flowering and seed formation stages and then without irrigation in seed formation stage by 1.09 and 0.96 Kg.m-3. Allstar and then Euroflor had highest WUE among sunflower cultivars by 1.01 and 0.94 Kg.m-3 respectively. Results also indicated that Euroflor was a tolerant cultivar and STI (Stress Tolerant Index) and GMP (Geometric Mean Productivity) were acceptable indexes for selection. Finally, deficit irrigation at seed formation stage had the lowest negative effect on yield and HI with suitable WUE. In addition, Euroflor showed the highest yield, drought tolerance and HI with suitable WUE.
