Abstract: 

Background and Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate surgery approach outcomes in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of lower lip.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed medical records of patients that diagnosed with SCC of the lower lip at Razi hospital at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in a 5 year period. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses using the chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests to compare the variables.Results: The age range of patients was 35 to 94 years (mean, 64.1 years; SD, 13.27 years), with a 5: 1 male-female ratio. SCC of the lower lip occurred more frequently in patients older than 60 years. 62.1% of the patients were addicted to cigarette and other tobacco compounds. It was noted significant association between chronic solar exposure in the job’s environment and incidence of SCC in lower lip. Mean diameter of the tumor was 28.1 mm (range, 5 to 63 mm). Recurrence was detected in 17 patients (24.6%). Two patients (2.89%) died due to lower lip SCC in this series.Conclusion: our study revealed that lower lip SCC is more prevalent in men and in eighth decade of life. As well, considering the low recurrence rate and high survival rate, surgery could be considered as an effective method of treatment.

Abstract: 

Background and Aim: Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC), including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in Iran. This study aimed to infer implicit information in the cases of NMSC patients referred to the Cancer Institute of Tehran.Methods: A number of 865 cases of NMSC related to 2007-2015 years were selected from the archives of Cancer Institute using simple random sampling method. Initially, epidemiological variables, were extracted and after preprocessing of the data, descriptive statistics were used to classify and graphic display of information.Results: The mean age for patients was identified 65 years and the highest and lowest numbers of cases were in age groups of 69-60 and 19-10 years respectively. The incidence of SCC was higher than BCC in the first four age decades and this trend was reversed in the next decades. About 56% of cases were BCC and 44% were SCC and frequency of NMSC in men was 2.33 times more than women. The head/neck and trunk were the highest and lowest involved positions. The disease had relapsed at least twice in 32% of cases. The disease history showed that most of patients were previously affected by kinds of cancers, cardiovascular or metabolic diseases. The occupation of 114 patients was found to be as high-risk jobs. Most patients were referred to Cancer Institute from northern and western parts of the country.Conclusion: Along with other studies, we found more cases of BCC than SCC, involvement of patients over 60 years at the head-neck and a previous history of cancer. But against other studies, SCC cases was found more in the first four decades of life than BCC cases, feet affected twice than hands and the locality of most cases was found in high latitudes. Patient records are potential resources that can help management of the diseases.

Abstract: 

Background and Aim: Staphylococcus aureus is the second cause of hospital acquired infections, and responsible for 80% of purulent infections, and majority of skin infections. About 30 to 50 percent of normal people carry staph in their nose or groin and armpits. VanA, VanB, VanC1, VanC2/C3, VanG, VanL, and VanX are genes responsible for encoding resistance to vancomycin, TychoPlanyn and Avoparcyn, among them vanBand vanAare the most common cause of resistance that could be located on a plasmid or a chromosome and can be transferred via conjugation. The aim of this study was to The aim of this study was to investigatethe role of VanA and VanB genes in Cefoxitin resistant Staphylococci aureuscausing skin infections in patients admitted to Razi Hospital in Tehran using real time PCR method.Methods: The samples were collected from Khordad 1394 for one year in the Microbiology Department of the Clinical Laboratory of Razi Hospital. Exudative skin lesions were sampled by sterile swab and cultured on the blood agar and EMB medium. Then catalase, oxidase and coagulase tests were performed on the gram-positive cocci and the sensitivity to vancomycinin Cefoxitin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was determined using the E-test method. The presence of vanAand vanBgenes were investigated by Real Time PCR.Results: Out of 978 patients with infected skin lesions, 733 samples of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated. Of these, 124 were Cefoxitin resistant, among them 8 samples had a high response rate of 3, and 5had high response above 16. But VanA and VanB genes were not responsible for resistance in any of them.Conclusion: Due to the development of resistant strains of Staphylococcus in skin and hospital infections, identification of its encoding genes are necessary in order to use appropriate antibiotics to reduce the course of treatment and the side effects of taking antibiotics.

Abstract: 

Background and Aim: Over the years, the surgical approach for complicated burns has changed significantly. The limited donor site skin has left as a problem yet. The objective of this study was to review the evidence on the safety and efficacy of Meek technique in patients with various extent of burns and age group levels.Methods: The most important medical databases including electronic library Cochrane (Cochrane Library), PubMed and Google Scholar were searched to find relevant articles till July 2015 without mesh language restrictions. Articles were examined independently by two reviewers and a structured form was used to collect data from included. The findings were qualitatively analyzed through (thematic synthesis).Results: Six papers were found, 2 were reviews. Meek technique facilitates high rate of expansion of the skin and allows covering more areas of the skin. This technique in combination with cultured epithelial autograft method is a useful additional option in achieving wound closure, especially in pediatric patients.Conclusion: Functional and aesthetics outcomes of burn wounds treated with Meek technique were satisfactory in most cases.

Abstract: 

Background and Aim: Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive technology that is widely used in the field of cosmetic medicine. The mechanism of action of microdermabrasion is mechanical peeling of the skin using metal crystals. This review was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of microdermabrasion in the treatment of scar, acne, striae and its other indications.Methods: A comprehensive electronic search was done in clinical evidence databases for clinical trials, systematic reviews, health economic evaluations, and health technology studies. The databases and search engines were PubMed, Ovid Medline, Scopus, Turning Research into Practice (TRIP), Center for Reviews and Disseminations (CRD), Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), National Health System Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED), Health Technology Assessment (HTA), Cochrane Library, and ClinicalKey. The search was done up to July 2014. Key references were manually searched to find relevant studies. The eligible articles were investigated regarding the safety and efficacy of microdermabrasion.Results: This systematic review includes 19 studies with a total of 368 patients, whom were treated with microdermabrasion for treatment of acne, vitiligo, melasma, acne scars, striae, skin rejuvenation, photo damaged skin and, photo-aging. Appraisal of the studies supported the efficacy and safety of microdermabrasion in treating the aforementioned skin problems.Conclusion: Microdermabrasion, either as a single therapeutic intervention or in combination with other interventions, can be used in the treatment of several skin diseases and conditions. Since its side effects are milder than some other interventions, generally, it is considered as a safe method.

Abstract: 

Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) scholars have explained the structure and function of each organ based on clinical observations and past experiences. The skin is especially important due to apparent clinical manifestations serving as a convenient diagnosis tool. This study was aimed to evaluate the anatomy and physiology of the skin as presented in ITM School and compare with conventional medicine. Relevant keywords were searched in ITM reference books, Google scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. After extracting the data, the results were classified in terms of concepts and tables.ITM scholars believe the embryonic origin of skin is similar to nervous tissue. In their view, the skin has a moderate temperament, and is a combination of fibers, nerve ends, muscles and vessels. Among the most important functions of the skin is the sense of touch, body temperature regulation, and excretion of wastes.In conventional medicine, the skin consists of epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis layers. The embryonic origin of epidermis is the ectoderm. Protection and body temperature regulation, sensory activities, gas exchange, absorption of ultraviolet rays and disposal of excess body electrolytes are considered as the most important skin functions.Overview of fetal origin, structure and function of the skin between these two schools of medicine interpreted in many ways, revealed many similarities.

The 12th congress was hold on 4-6 May 2017 in Bangalura. In that event many topics were presented including cosmetic procedures, lasers, PRP, dyspigmented diseases among others. A combination of dermatologic diseases and cosmetic modalities were the interesting point in this event.
