Abstract:

Objective One of the most typical ways of transmitting the infection is by hand, thus, much emphasis has been placed on hand hygiene. In this regard, this study aimed to determine the effect of tea tree oil and lavender on bacterial samples found in nurses’,hands. Methods This quasi-experimental study was performed on all nurses working in ICU wards. The samples were selected by an easy non-probability sampling method. The research tools were demographic information questionnaires and a bacterial culture registration form. In the intervention phase, on the first day in the first experimental group, 2 drops of lavender oil, on the second day, 2 drops of tea tree oil, and on the third day, 2 drops of distilled water were poured on the nurse’, s palm, and their hands were massaged for 10 seconds. Before and after the intervention, culture samples were taken from each group. The obtained data were analyzed with the Chi-square test, paired t test, and ANOVA in SPSS software v. 20 at a significant level of less than 0. 05. Results The most common organisms isolated at the beginning of the study were Staphylococcus epidermidis (76. 8%), Staphylococcus aureus (8. 8%), Klebsiella spp. (7. 9%), and Escherichia coli (6. 5%). The use of lavender oil and tea tree has been effective in reducing the microbial load of the palm. Hand massage with lavender oil had less effect on reducing germs (P=0. 003), but tea tree oil had a more significant reduction of pathogens (P=0. 001). Conclusion Lavender and tea tree oil reduced the microbial load of nurses. Both methods have been effective, but the effect of tea tree oil was more significant. Therefore, their use in handwashing is recommended to eliminate palm bacteria in ICU staff.

Abstract:

Objective The therapeutic effects of bee pollen have already been proven in various studies, but toxicity studies in this field are limited. Therefore, in this study, the possible toxicity effects of hydroalcoholic extract of flower pollen on liver, kidney, and pancreatic tissues of male rats are investigated. Methods Fourteen male rats were divided into two groups of seven: the first group received 800 mg/kg hydroalcoholic extract of bee pollen, and the second group received 0. 5 mL/100 g normal saline intraperitoneally for 1 day. Then, their livers, kidney, pancreas, and oxidative stress biomarkers were evaluated. In addition, pieces of liver, kidney, and pancreatic tissues were examined histopathologically. Results Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (P =0. 0212), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) enzymes (P =0. 0344), and malondialdehyde (MDA) biomarker (P =0. 018) of kidney tissue were significantly decreased in the hydroalcoholic extract of bee pollen group compared to the control group. The glutathione (GSH) biomarker of kidney tissue showed a significant increase in this group compared to the control group (P =0. 0031). The other evaluated parameters were not significantly different between the two groups (P> 0. 05). Histopathologically, no deleterious and toxicity effects were observed in the tissues. Conclusion Bee pollen has therapeutic properties and, as a nutrient, can be useful and effective for humans. In this study, this substance did not have toxicity effects on the liver, kidney, and pancreas and even protected vital organs in oxidative stress conditions. However, more research is needed to prove the toxicity of this valuable substance and to ensure its safety.

Objective Aerobic exercise and Saffron has beneficial effects on inflammatory response. The present study aims to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise combined with saffron extract supplementation on serum levels of Tumor Necrosis Factor-α,(TNF-α, ) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in rats following an aerobic exercise until exhaustion Methods This is an experimental study. Forty eight Wistar male rats were assigned into four groups: control (C), supplementation) SE), training (AT), and training+supplementation (AT+SE). Aerobic exercise was performed for 8 weeks (five sessions a week). supplementation was done by administrating 100 mg/kg/ day saffron extract by oral gavage. At the end of experiment, half of the rats was killed immediately before exhaustion and the remaining immediately after performing an acute aerobic exercise until exhaustion by running on the treadmill. Serum CRP and TNF-α,levels were measured by ELISA method. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, considering the significance level of P< 0. 05. Results Following an exhausting exercise, serum levels of CRP and TNF-α,in the AT+SE group significantly lower than in groups C (PCRP = 0. 001,PTNF-α, =0. 001), SE (PCRP=0. 001,PTNF-α, =0. 001) and AT (PCRP= 0. 021,PTNF-α,=0. 046). These markers in the AT group significantly lower than in groups C (PCRP=0. 004,PTNF-α, =0. 039) and SE (PCRP= 0. 014,PTNF-α, =0. 043). There was no significant difference between the other groups. Conclusion Aerobic exercise alone and in combination with the use of saffron extract may reduce the inflammatory responses following an exhausting exercise.

Abstract:

Objective The COVID-19 disease and related restrictive measures such as quarantine have affected many aspects in human life, including physical activity and mood. The present study aims to investigate physical activity and mental states of athletes in racket sports during general quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This is a descriptive correlational study. participants were 196 athletes in racket sports (123 males and 73 females). Their physical activity was measured by Cho’, s 5-item physical activity questionnaire surveying the type, frequency and intensity of training (from low to very high) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. To evaluate their mood states, we used the short form of Brunel Mood Scale. Chi-square test and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze data in SPSS v. 22 software. Results The number of training sessions per week and the duration of training decreased during quarantine compared to pre-quarantine period in both male and female racket players (P<0. 05). This reduction in duration and number of training sessions was negatively and significantly related to mood states (P= 0. 001). Conclusion Training has a positive effect on the mood states of athletes in racket sports during the COVID-19 pandemic. The intensity of training can affect their mood more than the duration of training. with the increase of training intensity, their negative moods decrease.
