Introduction: This study was performed to compare the effect of education involving lectures and simulation methods on nursing students’ knowledge about biological agents of hemorrhagic fevers. Hemorrhagic fevers are endemic infectious diseases in Iran. According to the list of biological agents published by the World Health Organization, the disease is likely to be used as a biological weapon. The World Health Organization recommends use of standard personal protective coating for health workers when caring for patients with hemorrhagic fevers. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of self-protection education against hemorrhagic fevers, on nursing students of AJA University of Medical Sciences.Materials and Methods: This study was an educational trial that was conducted during the summer of 2016 in the School of Nursing of AJA. In this study, 60 students were examined. After obtaining a written consent from the participants, they were randomly divided to two groups, traditional and simulation training. The data collection instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire. Research during the pretest, training implementation and posttest intervention in the two groups was conducted. Data was analyzed with the SPSS version 21 software and using paired t test and independent t test. Results: Knowledge of the studied subjects had no significant difference before and after the intervention (P>0.05).The knowledge average scores of the two groups receiving lecture training and simulation methods were 29.70±1.622 and 29.97±2.008 with independent t test and P>0.05 was not significant. However, education made a significant difference, regardless of the method, in mean scores before and after the intervention.Discussion and Conclusion: The results indicate that the two methods were equally effective for improving students’ knowledge.

Introduction: Attention to the comfort of patients is one of the most important objectives and roles of nurses. Nurses play a central role in taking care of patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of music therapy on the level of comfort, as well as homodynamic indexes of patients undergoing hemodialysis.Material and Methods: The present study was a clinical trial. Overall, 74 patients undergoing hemodialysis were recruited using the convenience sampling method and were randomly assigned to two groups of intervention and control. Subjects completed the demographic questionnaire, and blood pressure and heart rate were measured. The comfort level was then measured in the two groups using the Colcaba’s General Comfort Level Questionnaire. Music therapy was used in the intervention group for 30 minutes, three times per week. The comfort questionnaire was completed at the end of each intervention in the two groups. The vital signs were measured after intervention in the two groups. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 22 statistical software. Results: The mean score of general comfort had no significant difference between the two groups before the intervention (P=0.09). After the intervention, the mean score of general comfort in the intervention group was significantly less than the control group in the first (P=0.04), second (P<0.01), and third (P<0.01) session. The mean systolic blood pressure of the subjects before the intervention in the two groups had no significant difference (P=0.58) and after the intervention was not significant in each of three sessions. The mean diastolic blood pressure (P=0.13) and mean heart rate (P=0.6) of subjects before the intervention in the two groups had no significant difference, and by the third session, mean diastolic blood pressure (P=0.02) and mean heart rate (P=0.05) in the intervention group was less than the control group.Discussion and Conclusion: The research findings indicated that the use of music therapy during dialysis can increase the comfort of patients; hence, it is suggested that nurses can use this technique as a complementary method to increase comfort and stabilize vital signs in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Abstract:

Introduction: Today, there are different methods for teaching students and clinical staff to maintain their information, knowledge and medical skills. One of these modern teaching methods is based on concept map. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of concept mapping teaching methods based on meaningful learning of basic life support (BLS) in nursing students.Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study compared the two methods of concept mapping-based learning and lecture on meaningful learning of BLS in the Army nursing school in 2015. In this study, 57 nursing students from the first semester were enrolled in two groups to learn BLS using concept map and lecture methods. Twenty eight students were randomly assigned to the concept mapping group and 29 to the control group (speech). After the pre-test, students had two sessions of theory and a practical session of working with the model, and then were trained with concept mapping and speech, respectively. Immediately after the training, the first post-test and then post-test knowledge of students were taken regarding the knowledge without remembering, one and four weeks later. To collect data, a valid and reliable questionnaire was used. To analyze the data, SPSS software version 22, Fisher’s exact test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA (RM ANOVA) were used. Results: Before and after training both groups, there were statistically significant differences. The mean scores in all the three phases of post-test awareness training had a significant upward trend (P<0.001). However, while the total knowledge score in the lecture group was higher than the post-test in concept maps (P<0.05), this difference in statistically higher levels of knowledge was not significant between the two groups (P>0.05).Discussion and Conclusion: In this study, there was no statistically significant difference between teaching methods based on concept mapping and lecture regarding meaningful learning (higher levels of knowledge) of BLS.
