Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the levels of contribution by different scientific fields, to the production of scholarly papers published in Persian journals between 2001 and 2011. Methodology: This is a descriptive survey which uses scientometrics approaches. Research materials include all of the papers related to the fields of humanities, science, engineering, agriculture, veterinary and natural resources which were published in Persian scholar journals during 2001-2011. The list of these journals has been extracted from the Magiran database, the Islamic World Science Citation Database (ISC) and the Scientific Information Database (SID). Findings: Results reveal that the field of humanities had the highest level of scientific production, with the highest number of journals (421) and the highest number of papers (44416). This field also contained the highest number of subfields (17). Based on the findings, the greatest number of papers in the field of agriculture belongs to the subfield of agronomy; in the field of engineering, it is the subfield of chemistry, oil and polymer; and in the field of science it belongs to the subfield of biology. The average annual growth rate of publications during the research period was 26. 2% for the field of humanities, 5. 8% for engineering, 28. 9% for agriculture, veterinary and natural resources and 29. 2% for science. Conclusion: Further growth in scientific production in some of the subfields of study in most of cases could represent strengths and scientific development at a national level, and the continuation of this situation should be a priority for the country's scientific development. On the other hand, the low growth in some of subfields must be considered in national science policies and launching new journals. Overall, rapid growth in scientific production in Latin and Persian article promise to reach the 1404 Vision goals.

Abstract:

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between organizational and individual factors and research productivity of the faculty members at Tehran University. Methodology: The research is a correlational analysis that uses analytical and descriptive statistics. The study population consists of 842 faculty members at Tehran University which their names were indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database in 2014. The organization and academic data were extracted from the Center for Virtual Technologies at University of Tehran and the research productivity data were obtained from Organizational Intelligence Department of the Center for Virtual Technologies as well as WoS database. Findings: The results indicate meaningful relationship between gender and research productivity (when the decision criterion equals 0. 226 and test statistic equals 0. 162), as well as the relationship between age and productivity of faculty members (decision criterion = 0. 73 and test statistics = 0. 62). The statistical relation exist between subject areas and research productivity (when the decision criterion equals 0/8 and test statistic equals 0. 119), as well as the relationship between academic rank and productivity (decision criterion = 0/3 and test statistics = 0. 5). Conclusion: The results show that the women had higher number of scientific production only in basic sciences. Age had little impact on production levels, but degree and academic ranks had some impact on research productivity. Scientific productivity is correlated to the quality and rank of the university as well as faculties.

Abstract:

Purpose: This study analyzes the global network of scientific collaborations on intellectual property rights (IPR) and identifies subject clusters of scientific outputs of IPR in the Web of Science (WoS). Methodology: This study is an applied research so the scientometrics methods such as co-occurrence analysis and network analysis are used. 5752 scientific records indexed in WoS from 1982 to 2014 were analyzed. Findings: The findings show that annual growth rate of scientific outputs of IPR during years is 63. 3 percent. America is the most productive country in the field of IPR and also this country has an important role in shaping, directing and leading the IPR network. The University of Berkeley has an important place in the scientific network of IPR. In terms of subject area, the scientific outputs of IPR formed in five thematic clusters i. e. foreign direct investment, R&D activities, trading corporates and technology transfer. Conclusion: U. S. has a central role in shaping, leading and guiding the scientific flow of IPR. According to the main subject cluster of IPR, it can be said that IPR has an important place in international economy, so IPR is one of the most serious components for economic development.

Abstract:

Purpose: In this study, the inter-institutional collaboration of Iranian patents in international patent databases is analyzed to develop indicators that connect technological inventiveness of university researchers to both funding organizations and users, as well as to entrepreneurial activities by academics. Methodology: This research is an applied research that was conducted using scientometrics approaches. Organizational affiliation of Iranian patents retrieved from US Patents and Trademarks office (USPTO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and European Patents Office (EPO) from 1976 to 2013 and analyzed according to supporters of the patent or patent owners and divided to three groups of individuals, companies, and universities and research institutes. Findings: Of 120 retrieved patent, 33 items were supported by Iranian Oil Organization followed by Shahid Beheshti Medical Science University with 8 patents. The rate of inter-institutional collaboration on the patents was very limited. Conclusion: The survey indicated that most patented academic inventions are connected to and often publicly funded by scientific research by the inventors and tend to be utilized in large firms rather than in start-up companies founded by academic entrepreneurs. An exclusive analysis of patents can point to patent concentrations on certain universities, to inventors and assignees, or to potential gaps in translating applied science into industrial technology.

Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this research was co-word analysis of papers extracted from the Information Science and Knowledge Studies master theses. Methodology: This research is an applied work conducted by co-words analysis approach of scientometrics. For this purpose, the data of 1237 master theses were collected from two online catalogs and IRANDOC databases. In addition, 508 papers extracted from these theses were found on Magiran and Noormags databases, which 1428 keywords were then extracted from them. Through data processing, the number of keywords was reduced to 124. Data analysis was conducted using Ravar Matrix, Ucinet and NetDraw software packages. Findings: Thematic mapping of the keywords using co-words analysis technique indicates that the topics internet, Webometrics and information storage and retrieval had top ranking in degree-centrality and betweenness indicators. In addition, the topics locating libraries, selective dissemination of information and education had the highest impact on the network in terms of closeness centrality. Conclusion: Mapping the knowledge structure of papers extracted from master theses could help to represent and visualize the thematic structure of research in the field of Information Science and Knowledge Studies and identify more specific research focuses within this field.

Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this study was to calculate the value of Iranian articles on chemistry based on their citation scores. Moreover, it was aimed to identify the association between the number of citations and the location of citations in papers. Methodology: This research is a descriptive study in which a scientometric method (citation analysis) was used to investigate the Iranian chemistry articles, indexed in WOS. The study population included 11035 citations to 517 Iranian chemistry publications which were published in 176 journals in 2010. To identify the association between the number of citations and the value of citation location, Spearman correlation coefficient was used. Findings: Findings show that the majority of articles were cited in introduction, followed by methodology and findings/discussion sections. The majority of papers (86. 55%) acquired the lowest value (0. 15-1) regarding citation locations. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of citations and the value of citation locations (r=0. 78). Conclustion: Results show that citation location can evaluate the impact and quality of documents better than the number of citations it receives. Number of citations can be a good predictor for the value of citation locations.
