Abstract:

Purpose: Regarding the increasing growth of the social web and its tools as a new ground to distribute research findings and scholar communications, there is a necessity for evaluation of the quality of scientific research, which was distributed through this media. This study aims to introduce altmetrics as a new solution for evaluation of the research impact in the social Web.Methodology: This study has been done based on an analytical and critical literature review. In the first part of the paper, altmetrics has been defined and then the related literature has been explored to identify the limitations and weaknesses of the traditional methods of research evaluation. In the next stage the indicators and tools of altmetrics have been explained. Moreover, the benefits, implications and limits of this method have been explained in more details. The final part of the paper includes a roadmap for further altmetrics research.Findings: Altmetrics’ indicators which are based on the social web are being used as new alternative methods of evaluating the usefulness and the impact of articles and other types of research findings. These methods, which are becoming more popular, are useful to assess the impact of academic and nonacademic studies. The speed, simplicity and clarity of these indexes are among the reasons of the accreditation of this new approach. Finally, it will lead to the development and flourishing of these new scholar communications. Conclusion: Altmetrics is a new method of assessing the impact and the distribution of academic and nonacademic studies and can be considered as an easy, appropriate and relevant way of research evaluation. This approach is still in its beginning stages and its development requires more detailed studies to examine the efficiency of alternative methods.

Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this study was citation and co-authorship analysis of Islam and Quran sciences researcher between years of 1993–2012.Methodology: The research method is survey. scientometrics rules such as Lutka’s and Bradford rules were used. Data were gathered from WOS database. HistCite software was utilized to build histography maps. “UCINet” and “NetDraw” were used to draw co-authorships maps.Findings: in general, 4535 records were published in this period. The distribution of the collaboration frequency of the authors follows the Lutka’s law, but distribution of Subject frequency of the core documents was not confirmed by Bradford’s rule. The average growth rate was 6.4%. The scientific structure of this domain on the base on of local citations and also global citations frequency showed that these maps consist of 9 clusters, also co-authorship maps consist of 2 main components. Conclusion: The results showed that the collaboration between the authors is weak. Citation analysis showed that there is a significance correlation between the number of authors and the number of citations, also the collaboration rate of an author has a significant correlation with the number of documents published by that author.

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test Lotka’s law base on scientific publication productivity of Iranian scholars in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS).Methodology: The data were collected from the Iranian journals (2002-2013) and were sorted in Excel. Totally, 1994 articles published by 1470 authors during the above period. The authors’ frequencies were calculated based on the number of articles and regression was calculated using Excel.Findings: Lotka’s Law was tested using the formula, the values of the exponent n and the constant c were computed. The values of n were calculated to be 2.12. Findings show that %63.26 authors published one work only. Conclusion: The results show that Lotka's law did not confirm among Iranian LIS scholars.

Abstract:

Purpose: The main purpose of this study was comparative evaluation of scientific productions of Iran, Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database during 2002-2012.Methodology: This is an applied study and is done by scientometrics methodology. For analysis of findings, descriptive and inferential statistics (Tukey’s test and Pearson correlation test) was performed by SPSS software version 20. Study population was the Islamic countries of Iran, Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan.Findings: Our findings show that the best ranking of scientific productions and citations of the countries belong to Turkey, Iran, Egypt and Pakistan, respectively. But the in the ranking based on the average citation rate per paper Iran stood after Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan. The average citation rate per paper for Turkey in 11 fields out of 22 fields was in the highest position and in 2 fields was the lowest position among others. Iran was in highest ranking in one field and in 10 fields in the lowest position. Turkey and Iran had the best and the worst performance respectively. Hot papers belong to Iran (9), Turkey (7), Pakistan (5), and Egypt (4), respectively. The number of subject areas cited for each of the countries was Turkey (22), Iran (20), Pakistan (19) and Egypt (16), respectively. In all countries, (between the number of scientific publications and citations rates significant positive correlation was observed). Tukey’s test showed (difference between the number of citations for). Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan. Conclusion: Survey showed that Iran’s growth of scientific production, among leading Islamic countries was impressive, but no in growth rate of citations.

Abstract:

Purpose: Triple Helix (TH) collaborations involves university, industry and government to provide a networked infrastructure for shaping the dynamic fluxes of knowledge based on innovations locally and these fluxes remain emergent within the domains.Methodology: In this study, we analyze the mutual information flow among university, industries and governmental organizations (U-I-G). The study was conducted with Scientometrics approach. The research populations consisted of 367 Iranian scientific centers with publications indexed in Scopus during 1997-2012.Findings: The findings show that the T (UIG) index, is -0.18 that in compare with other developed nations and even in developing countries is not significant. The Institute for Research on Fundamental Sciences (IPM) exhibited the highest number of international collaborations. Conclusion: It can be concluded that intersectional collaboration patterns in Iran is weak. However, the number of publications on Scopus remains satisfying.

Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this research is to determine citation behavior of writers of M.Sc. theses in agriculture field, and to specify behavioral patterns, (informational language, and temporal) that are used by them.Methodology: This is a bibliometrics research (by use of citation analysis technique) that uses content analysis method. Statistical population of this research includes all of the present citations at reference section of Bu-Ali Sina University M.Sc. theses in agriculture field during years of 2001-2011 (3370 citations). The required information was compiled by use of special cards, Citation analysis and library studies and defects were eliminated by visiting different websites and union catalogue of libraries of Bu-Ali Sina University. Afterwards, data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, and using SPSS19, Excel 2007.Findings: Citation to native sources is more than foreign ones. Citations to Latin journals (69.15%) are more than Persian Journals (30.85%).Conclusion: the study revealed that books and other print materials are prior in use. Hence, use of Internet is increasing.
