Abstract:

After a brief introduction about the life and works of Qā zi Nezā m al-Din, the 7th/ 11th-century bilingual poet of Esfahan, the authors have presented his Nuniyye qasideh (an ode with the letter “ nū n” [n] as the final sound of its rhyme), in praise of Imam Ali; and by virtue of his manuscript works and on the basis of the established techniques of redacting manuscripts, they have examined the differences of these MSS. Then, they have analyzed the structure of the qasideh, expounding and translating its distiches one by one. A very important conclusion of this study, which has been conducted through a descriptive-analytical approach, is that, in this poem, Qā zi Nezā m al-Din appears as a Shi’ i scholar, relating eulogies of Imam Ali that can be found only in Shi’ i sources.

Abstract:

The earliest Divā n of Khwā jū Kirmā nī (1290-1352) was collected and transcribed during the poet's lifetime. The bulk of that Divā nwhich is now housed in Tehran’ s National Malek Library, has already been the subject of a great deal of research, and was published as facsimile in 2013. However, this manuscript is but a section of an original copy that was disassembled into several portions about a hundred years ago and transferred to different libraries. Challenging the common belief that it is a complete manuscript, the present article brings to light two other manuscripts, arguing that these together with the Malek Library copy, were all once parts of the very same original codex. One fragment of the original codex is preserved in the British Library, and another in the Central Library of Tehran University. The article aims to reconstruct the original codex and establish the order in which Khwā jū ’ s poems originally appeared. This has involved subjecting the three fragments to detailed textual analysis, comparing their contents with more than 30 other manuscripts of Khwā jū ’ s works from libraries around the world. Further, the artistic merits of the original manuscript, in the context of book making during the Inju dynasty, have been addressed and the approximate date of the dispersal of Khwā jū ’ s Divā n estimated.

Abstract:

A good number of poetry anthologies, due to the presence therein of selected poems of the earlier Persian speaking poets, are counted as some of the important secondary sources used in critical emending of works of poetry as well as poetic studies. One of such anthologies is the manuscript 14456 at the Ganjbakhsh Library, which was most probably scribed towards the end of the 8th/14th century, having great resemblance to the Yahyā Towfiq anthology (dated 754 AH) collected by Sa’ d al-Din Elā hi, and the Majlī s Library anthology 534 (dated 11th /17th century). In the Ganjbakhash anthology, there are new recordings of Bondā r’ s Fahlavi couplets differing from recorded forms in other sources. The authors of the present article have set out these recorded variants and, then, based on the variants they recommend, they have defined some of the obscure words in them.

Abstract:

Nū r al-‘ oyū n, by Abū Rū h Moḥ ammad b. Manṣ ū r-e Jorjā nī (Zarrī ndast), is the first Persian book on ophthalmology to have apparently been written in the 5th/11th century. This work was redacted by Yū sefbeyg Bā bā pū r based on six manuscripts and published in 2012. The redactor has made no use of the old and original codex kept at the Mar‘ aš i Library (No. 12528) nor has he been successful in reading his own selected manuscripts. He made no effort either to find the sources of the author of the Nū r al-‘ oyū n and to establish the correct recorded versions by way of comparing the book with such Arabic ophthalmological books as Al-‘ Aš r maqā lā t fi al-‘ ayn, by Ḥ onayn b. Isḥ aq; Taḏ kerat al-kaḥ ḥ ā lī n, by ‘ Alī b. ‘ Ī sā al-Kaḥ ḥ ā l, and the ophthalmology section of Al-Hā wi. A comparison between the Nū r al-‘ oyū n and Taḏ kerat al-kaḥ ḥ ā lī n reveals that a substantial part of the former is in facta translation of the Arabic text of the latter. Bad reading, inappropriate deletions and additions, incomplete indexes, and inaccurate definitions in the word lists of this edition indicate that the Nū r al-‘ oyū n is amongst the works in need of further correction. In the present article, while showing the influences and impressions that the Nū r al-‘ oyū n hasreceived from other books, some of the erroneous recordings of the text together with explanatory notes are presented.

Abstract:

Hasan b. Hamzeh-ye Tabari is a 3-4th-century Shi’ i scholar who transferred a considerable amount of Shi’ i written heritage from Iranian sheikhs to Bagdad’ s religious scholars. In addition to authoring many books on Islamic sciences such as Hadith (Tradition), Feqh (Jurisprudence) and Kalā m (Islamic speculative theology), he had the talent of writing poetry. In his Tabarestā n History, Ebn-e Esfandiyā r has quoted several couplets of a qasideh composed by Hasan b. Hamzeh, which narrates his travel from Ā mol to Mashhad. In this article, the writer, in addition to reproducing the versified travelogue of Hasan b. Hamzeh, addresses a misread word; and through discovering its correct form, he points out that this couplet refers to Hasan’ s home during his childhood and youth years, and that it must be interpreted as his love for “ Mā matir” . In the latter part of the article, by examining and assessing the views put forward as to a grave in Mā matir, on the one hand, and by referring to certain evidences and clues and drawing attention to misreadings and lexical distortions that have occurred, on the other, it has been demonstrated that the grave belongs to Abū al-Qā sem, Hasan b. Hamzeh’ s father.

Abstract:

Sū zani of Samarqand made use, especially in his satires and lampoons, of such rare words that are often exemplified in dictionaries only by the poet’ s own verses containing those words. Since the early compilers of dictionaries had at their disposal old codices of Sū zani’ s Divā n, they generally cited the correct versions of his verses. However, as the existing manuscripts of Sū zani’ s Divā n are hardly old enough, one can benefit from those very verses, like an alternative manuscript, in correcting his Divā n.

Abstract:

Following the Timurid decline, Abd al-Aziz b. Abd al-Qā der of Marā gheh left his birthplace, Herat, for Bursa and joined the court of the Ottoman Sultā n Mohammad b. Morā d, presenting him with his essay, Naqā vat al-advā r on music. Even though the general topics that Abd al-Aziz has stated in this essay are taken from his father’ s tracts, there are useful explanatory notes here and there in his own essays. Additionally, in this book he has made mention of some of his innovations. For instance, he speaks of two “ sho’ beh” (literally, branch) that he has invented calling them “ shā hi” and “ safā ” . We have found a manuscript of his in which he has presented, in musical notation, a song in the safā branch, in the dawr-e mokhammas (literally, fivefold round) using letters and numbers. In this article, assumptions have been suggested with a view to finding the rhythm of this song and the way syllables are connected to the dawr-e iqā ’ i (literally, rhythmic cycle).

Abstract:

Taṣ ḥ eef means: reading a word in such a way that its meaning changes. Taṣ ḥ eef may find its way into texts due to differing reasons; a very important one being the outward resemblance among the letters of alphabet. In the present article, attempts have been made to clearly classify some of the forms of taṣ ḥ eef and bad reading. In this classification, letters whose differences are limited only to their punctuation (noqtehgozā ri), such as ب، ث، ت، پ(b, p, t, th respectively)have not beenaddressed. Only those letters have been dealt with that may, at first glance, appear to have no apparent resemblance to each other, like ک and ل(k and l respectively). This article could serve as a preparatory basis for emending some of the misreadings that have occurred in certain texts, proposing guidelines to be used by redactors who have difficulty in reading certain words.
