Abstract:

Background: Inflammatory and obstructive tonsillar diseases are among the most common diseases in childhood, and tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in children. Current evidence indicates the potential association between cholesterol and inflammation. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of serum and tissue cholesterol in children undergoing tonsillectomy by gas- liquid chromatography. Methods: Eighty six children with an average age of 7.02±0.24 who referred to Tabriz Children' s Hospital were studied with signs of infection and large tonsils. Tonsillectomy was performed and tissues were evaluated by using hematoxylin- eosin technique. The sampling process lasted for one year from February 2010 to 2011. Patients were divided in two groups of hyperplasia (n=48) and chronic tonsillitis (n=38). The cholesterol content of serum and tonsillar tissues were extracted and measured by gas-liquid chromatography.Findings: There was no significant difference in serum cholesterol between the two groups (P=0.32). However, the tonsillar cholesterol level in the chronic tonsillitis group was higher than the hyperplasia group (P=0.038). In the chronic tonsillitis group, the level of tissue cholesterol in the pathological grade 4 was significantly higher than other grades (P=0.009).Conclusion: The level of tissue cholesterol in children with chronic tonsillitis was higher than those with tonsillar hyperplasia and this level was higher in tonsillitis with higher pathological grade.

Abstract:

Background: Hospitalization in intensive care units (ICUs) results tactile deprivation, which may cause physiologic imbalance. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of hand tactile stimulation on the vital signs of traumatic head injury patients in Qazvin ICUs.Methods: This clinical trial study was conducted on sixty patients with severe brain trauma admitted to ICUs in Qazvin, in 2016. The subjects were selected by the convenience sampling method and assigned in two groups of intervention and control. Hands, wrists and palms of patients were touched for 5 minutes twice a day (morning and evening) and vital signs were recorded immediately from the 1st to 5th day of admission. Data were analyzed by the paired and independent t tests.Findings: According to the results, hand tactile stimulation significantly decreased systolic blood pressure level (P=0.0001), diastolic blood pressure (P<0.05) and respiration rate (P<0.05) in the intervention group. However, tactile stimulation had no significant effect on the body temperature of the patients (P>0.05).Conclusion: As the positive effect of hand tactile stimulation on decrease of heartbeat rate and blood pressure in patients with brain trauma, it is recommended to use tactile stimulation methods on ICUs patients.

Background: Despite the high prevalence of cyclic mastalgia and disagreement about its therapeutic methods, there is a lot of ambiguity about breast pain yet. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of individual counseling on the quality of pain in the women with cyclic mastalgia. Methods: This randomized- controlled trial study was conducted in 2017 on eighty eligible women with cyclic mastalgia that had referred to Health Centers in Karaj, Iran. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups; intervention and control. Four individual counseling sessions were held for intervention group. With a special visual analog scale for pain and Cardiff's breast pain chart, cyclic mastalgia was diagnosed. Pain was assessed before and after consultation with McGill pain quality questionnaire. T-test and ANCOVA were used to examine the means of pain quality before and after the intervention.Findings: Demographic results including, marital status, educational level, occupation, spouse' s education and the husband's job were not significant. Also, the history of lactation, surgery, breast sampling, benign breast disease, nipple discharge and breast injury were no significant between two groups as the chi-square test. But, after the intervention, the McGill mean score test in all of pain dimensions showed a significant difference between two groups (P=0.001).Conclusion: This study showed that counseling can lead improvement of pain quality indices in affecting women. As the result, counseling can be suggested as a suitable treatment for mild to moderate pain.

Background: Due to the high prevalence of oral diseases and lack of knowledge, giving the proper education is needed to familiarize patients with oral diseases. Objective: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of using an educational booklet on patients’ knowledge. Methods: This interventional study was conducted from spring to winter 2016 on fifty patients referred to Mashhad Dental School. An educational booklet of oral diseases describes various domains of oral diseases in six different groups. Also a questionnaire containing 18 questions of oral diseases that was prepared and used in two stages, prior to the intervention and after the intervention. The patients were divided into control (n=25) and intervention (n=25) groups. Initially, a pre-test questionnaire was given to both groups. The intervention group received the educational booklet. After one month, the post-test questionnaire was taken from both groups. Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, Fisher and independent t-test were used for statistical analysis.Findings: The difference between mean score changes was significant in both groups respectively 1.6±0.12 and 5.4±1.5 (P<0.001). The intervention significantly increased the knowledge score for all domains in the intervention group compared to the control group (P<0.001). The booklet had the most significant effect on the awareness of cancer and the least influence on pain. Conclusion: It seems that the educational booklet significantly could enhance the level of patients’ knowledge about oral diseases.

Abstract:

Background: Family planning means planning for the future of fertility and is aimed at preventing unplanned and high-risk pregnancies, illicit abortions and providing maternal and child health. Objective: The present study evaluated the demand for contraceptive methods in women referring to health centers in Qazvin, Iran in 2017.Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted in 11comprehensive centers of urban health services in Qazvin. The research population were 384 married women from 10-49 years old who referred to the health centers by simple random sampling method Data collection tools were done by researcher-made questionnaire, interview and reviewing family profiles. Data were analyzed using X2 and Spearman correlation coefficient.Findings: The mean age of women was 31.79±6.376 years. Among families, 40.6% had only one child and 57.8% of them didn’t want to have a child in the future. Also, 51% of them used natural distancing method and 16.4% used condom as a contraceptive device and didn’t have any plan to use confident methods. There was a significant relationship between age, education, receiving useful trainings and consulting services with the current distancing method (P<0.05).Conclusion: According to the results, the difference between the use and demand for distancing devices may lead to increase unwanted pregnancy and abortion. Therefore, interventions need to adjust the age of marriage, develop free services for distancing methods, and promote the management of educational and consulting services for families who are not interested in childbearing.

Abstract:

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells with the ability to divide and differentiate into distinct cell types. The source of these cells is from embryos and adults, that each cell has its own specific characteristics. For nearly decades, experimental studies have been conducted to use these types of cells to treat various diseases. Parkinson's disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, resulting in a deficiency of dopaminergic neurons. Therefore, we study the role of stem cell therapies in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Initially, 73 relevant articles selected from valid databases such as ISC, SID, Google Scholar and PubMed and the role of each type of stem cell in the treatment of Parkinson's disease was collected. Stem cells can be used in experimental studies regard to the unique characteristics and using different laboratory agents for any particular type of cells. Stem cells can provide an unlimited source of dopaminergic neurons for transplantation and improve motor behavior and symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Study and comparison of different types of stem cells refer to the more effective role of neural and umbilical stem cells in treating Parkinson's disease.

Abstract:

Arachnoid cysts are developmental cerebral disorders that are mostly asymptomatic and diagnosed accidentally on routine brain imaging. Sometimes, these cysts can lead to serious complications such as intracystic and subdural hemorrhage. These hematomas often occur after minor head trauma but in some cases, hemorrhagic complication can occur without obvious predisposing insult. Our reported case is a 19 years old man admitted with acute neurological signs and diagnosed as subdural hematoma and treated without any history of recent head trauma. The only risk factor causing bleeding was arachnoid cyst.
