BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The defensive role of saliva is mainly played via immunoglobulins. Periodontal infections are the most common diseases in oral cavity and therefore defensive function of saliva against these infections are important. With regard to the effects of systemic diseases on defensive function of saliva, the objective of this study was to survey the relationship between gingivitis and salivary immunoglobulins in patients with thalassemia major. METHODS: This study was done on 55 children (between 5-12 years old) with thalassemia major who referred to thalassemia centre of Amirkola children hospital. Of these, 30 cases with gingivitis and 25 without gingivitis were chosen as case and control groups, respectively. Questionnaires were prepared and then evaluation of gingiva condition was done. Saliva samples were taken and examined by ELISA. FINDINGS: There was no a significant difference between the rate of IgA, IgG and IgM in two groups. Also, there was not relationship between severity of gingivitis and the rate of salivary immunoglobulins.CONCLUSION: T- cells affect on the activity of B cells. With regard to reduction of activity of T-cells lymphocyte (CD4) in thalassemia and the effect of these cells on promotion of B- lymphocyte function, B- cells can not response to gingivitis by synthesis of immunoglobulins.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: One of the non-invasive methods for diagnosis and differentiation of abnormal lesions from normal tissue is ultrasonic tissue characterization method with one of measuring of elastic modulus. This investigation was conducted to design a measurement method for elastic modulus. METHODS: For measurement of elastic modulus of breast tissue and abnormal masses, breast tissue should be compressed controllably and with regard to the rate of displacement of masses and normal tissue, the kind of lesion is diagnosed. For production of controllable stress in tissue, two hand and mechanized loading systems have been designed and produced. FINDINGS: With loading of tissue by these systems and saving ultrasonic images, and processing of images for measurement of displacement of lesion, elastic modulus was calculated. CONCLUSION: These loading systems are able to apply compression forces in tissue and grab of compressed tissues synchronously. In this study, structure and quality of operation of these loading systems were surveyed.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hydroalcoholic extract of melissa officinal is (MO) has been considered as an anticonvulsant in traditional medicine. This study was done to determine its effect in prevention of convulsions induced by nicotine in mice. METHODS: Normal saline (10ml/kg) was injected to control group (i.p). After preparation of hydroalcoholic extract of MO by maceration method, doses of 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mg/kg of this extract were administered separately at 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes before injection of nicotine. Then intensity, duration and latency of convulsions and mortality rate were surveyed.FINDINGS: Administration of the extract with doses of 800 and 1000 mg/kg at 15, 30 and 45 minutes and with dose of 600 mg/kg at 30 min before injection of nicotine significantly increased the latency of convulsions (p <0.05). None of administered doses changed the intensity of convulsions significantly.CONCLUSION: Obtained results showed that hydroalcoholic extract of melissa officinalis (MO) cause to increase latency and intensity of convulsions induced by nicotine.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Overlap of primary headaches is common and it causes difficulty in correct diagnosis and effective management of headache. METHODS: This study was done on patients with headache. The headache was diagnosed by a neurologist according to criteria that developed by international headache society. All patients were followed up at least for three times. The effect of sex on overlap of migraine and tension headaches were analysed by chi-square test and differences was considered at p<0.05.FINDINGS: Within 531 studied patients (395 were female and 136 were male), overlap of migraine subtypes occurred in 40.7% of females and 32.1% of males with migraine. Also, tension headache was observed in 30% of females and 18.6% of males with migraine that it was not statistically meaningful. One of five males with cluster headache was involved in trigmenal neuralgia and one of two females with chronic paroxysmal hemicrania had migraine.CONCLUSION: Coexistence of primary headaches was common and there was not a significant difference between males and females.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Congenital missing or absence of one or more teeth is one of anomalies that are mostly seen alone or with hereditary syndromes. Diagnosis of missing can prevent further dento-facial complications. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of missing of anterior and premolar permanent teeth among 12-17 year old people in Babol. METHODS: This study was done on 1536 students (12-17 years old) in Babol. They were selected by multi-stage sampling method. A periapical radiography was taken to confirm the missing and then the results were analyzed by using ANOVA test. FINDINGS: From all of 1536 cases, 132 (8.59%) had true missing (8.4% were male and 8.8% were female). The most common missing teeth were mandibular second premolar (45.5%), maxillary lateral incisor (34%) and maxillary second premolar (10.6%). Meanwhile, this congenital missing of teeth in two sexes was mostly the same. CONCLUSION: According to the results, it is necessary to pay more attention to missing teeth in dental examinations.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease that often involves sheep. Sometimes, it may be found in human as an accidental host. It is mainly occurred by consumption of contaminated herbs with metacercarias of fasiola hepatica. The adult phase is in the biliary tree. Most of the human infections are without symptom. This study was done on a case of fascioliasis with uncommon clinical manifestation. CASE: An eight year old child referred with abdominal distention and with fever from four months ago. Severe ascites and hepatosplenomegaly were found in physical examination. In paraclinical investigations, eosinophilia in peripheral blood smear, eosinophilic granuloma in liver, and positive serologic titers and ova of fasciola hepatica in stool were seen. The patient was successfully treated with triclabendazole without any side effects. CONCLUSION: In children, fascioliasis should be considered in differential diagnosis of ascites with eosinophilia. The administration of triclabendazole is recommended for children with fascioliasis.
